Job Description

account and ensure prompt responses to faculty and student

• Class Use Reporting. Monitor and report on various Class Use
statistics for collections study room and gallery visits, student
research, and online exhibits. Prepare these reports for internal
(ODD, Management Team) and external (Museum Board, Penn)
review.
• Student and Faculty Engagement. As needed, assist with the
planning and execution of other student and faculty programming,
including special exhibitions, internships, work-study supervision,
student research projects, and the maintenance of website and
marketing materials.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in a field related to the Museum's holdings
and/or in Museum Studies (Collections Management) required
• Masters preferred
• 0-3 year experience, or equivalent combination of education and
work experience; broad knowledge of material culture, including
archaeological and ethnographic materials required; record of
involvement in excavations and/or field research preferred
• Computer literacy required
• Experience with collections management databases (e.g. EMu or
Archivist's Toolkit) preferred

Job Description Summary

The Exhibition Designer leads design efforts to produce engaging
exhibition environments and visitor experiences at the Penn Museum
for diverse audiences. Reporting to the Director of Exhibitions,
the position envisions, articulates, and advocates for creative
design approaches for the overall environment for galleries,
temporary exhibitions, and displays for the Museum.

The position collaborates and coordinates with content experts,
curators, interpretive planners, graphic designers, multimedia
designers, preparators, conservators, keepers, and others to
safely, accurately, and appropriately present the Museum's research
and collections in exhibition format. Along with the Graphic
Designer and Interpretive Planner, they develop detailed design
packages from concept through final design for presentation and
communication of the design idea.

The Exhibition Designer manages the design aspects of exhibition
planning--coordinate and facilitate design meetings, establish
design budget projections, establishing and maintaining
relationships with outside vendors and independent contractors, and
liaise with all stakeholders to ensure clear communications
throughout the process.

This position must be able to manage several design projects
simultaneously, will respond to safety and environment standards
established by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and will be
required to mentor undergraduate and graduate students on a regular
basis.

• Serve as primary exhibit designer on assigned projects.
Envision, articulate, and advocate for creative design solutions to
present the Museum's research and collections in memorable ways to

design, fabrication, and execution.
• Function as primary liaison with external/contract design
resources as needed.
• Collaborate with the Interpretive Planner and Graphic Designer

including detailed design packages from concept design through
construction documentation.
• Translate and communicate visually to a wide variety of people
including fellow designers and exhibit builders in order to
effectively execute the vision for an exhibition.
• Develop project design strategies and schedules and track
progress against plan for on-time completion.
• Review and comment on shop drawings and visit fabrication
facilities, as necessary, to ensure designs are understood and
executed properly.
• Manage all archived design documents and distribution to other
team members, when necessary.
• Coordinate and facilitate meetings as necessary to ensure the
continuing progress of the project.
• Meet regularly with the Director of Exhibitions to discuss
design ideas and provide status of projects.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree (BFA, BA, BS) in architecture, design, or
related field, and 3-5 years experience in designing object-based
museum exhibitions or similar environments.
• Experience designing exhibitions incorporating media and
interactive components is preferred. Demonstrated experience in
designing multiple complex projects simultaneously with diverse
teams and tight deadlines.
• Ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholders to build
consensus, with keen eye to creating intellectually and emotionally
engaging exhibition environments is key.
• Proven, clear verbal, written, and visual communication skill
is required. Ability to work in multiple platforms to create and
share drawings, such as VectorWorks, AutoCad, SketchUp, Adobe
Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Microsoft Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and collections database software is required.
• A working knowledge of materials and production methods used to
create environments is needed. Experience working with students is
a plus.

Job Description Summary

Unpacking the Past (UtP) is a free multi-point program offered to 6th and 7th grade classes in Philadelphia Title I schools. The program includes an in-class lesson, a field trip with paid bus, and extension lessons - all designed to explore what connects humans across time, place, and culture. The Part-time Museum Educator (PTME) works four days per week for 6-7 hours per day (an average of 25 hours per week). During the school year, The PTME will spend most days teaching classes who are participating in the UtP program – either in classrooms across the city or at the Penn Museum. All lessons are designed to relate to school curriculum on ancient cultures and to show connections between the ancient and modern world. The PTME may assist with ongoing UtP program design, including program evaluation and content research.

In the summer months (June, July, August), the Part-time Museum Educator will support summer camp operations at the Museum. The Part-time Museum Educator will lead gallery lessons and workshops for Penn Museum Anthropology Camp, a day camp for children ages 6-13. The Part-Time Museum educator may assist with gallery lesson and workshop planning for summer camp. There may be an opportunity to shift working schedules in summer months.

The program reaches approximately 6,000 students in about 100 schools and includes an in-class lesson, a field trip with paid bus, and extension lessons - all designed to explore what connects humans across time, place, and culture. Responsibilities include:
• Work ~25 hours/week (mostly between hours of 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM, M-Th, or T-F)
• Learn to teach existing lessons
• Drive Museum vehicles to schools throughout the city to teach in-class lessons
• Facilitate gallery tours and hands-on workshops at the Museum
• Support program evaluation by administering and collecting surveys from participants
• Assist with providing other programs for non-UtP K12 groups onsite, as needed
• Support summer camp operations in June, July, and August. (lead gallery lessons and workshops for children ages 6-13)
• Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in humanities, education, museum studies, cultural studies, or related field, or HS degree with demonstrated teaching experience working with middle school students. 1-2 years experience teaching and/or programming, in-person and/or virtually, within K-8 classroom, or in museum or other informal learning environments or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. to bring materials offsite to classrooms. Must be self-motivated, organized, and goal oriented. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Job Description

International Classroom Educators (IC Educators) help students learn from an educator’s own personal heritage and experiences. Furthermore, the International Classroom Program extends the Penn Museum mission to “transform understanding of the human experience” by promoting intercultural dialogue and engagement through interactive workshops. Educators will deliver cultural educational programs at the Penn Museum, in off-site learning communities (e.g. schools, libraries, and/or senior living communities), and/or virtually (from the Museum or from a remote location, as conditions allow).

The IC Educator(s) will work between 1-5 hours per week, determined by reservation requests and the IC Educator’s availability. These work hours will be to present their workshop and will usually occur during school hours (mostly Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8:00-3:00pm). This is a year-round position, which regularly experiences increased hours in the Spring and less in the Summer. IC Educators are compensated with a base honorarium for each workshop session; this honorarium is increased for larger groups and off-site/outreach sessions. IC Educators are not financially compensated for the development of their workshop but will receive 1) instructional support from the Global Education Manager & the LPE team, and 2) special access to select Museum programming.
