Data Science at Philo

Data underpins everything we do at Philo: making informed business decisions; analyzing and improving the quality of our streaming experience; running product experiments to optimize our signup flows; and making it easier for our users to find the perfect thing to watch. On the Data Science team, we’re looking for someone who is comfortable working on a variety of interesting engagement, content discoverability, experimentation, and retention-related problems across our streaming service. You’ll be working closely with other data scientists, analysts, and engineers to build and deploy solutions directly for our service.

We are passionate about problem-solving and providing data-informed insights for the entire company using both cutting-edge techniques and proven practices in close collaboration with every department. To complete our work we build on modern open-source tools including dbt, GrowthBook, Robyn, Superset, and PyTorch as well as SaaS tools such as Segment, SageMaker, AWS Glue, Mode, Avo, and BigEye.

Some of the recent projects our Data Science team members have worked on include:
• Modeling to determine which early product behaviors predict conversion
• Running experiments to evaluate content personalization
• Building data models for analysis of lifecycle marketing communications
• Price sensitivity research and competitive market analyses

Qualifications

Philo is seeking a Senior Product Data Scientist with demonstrated understanding of statistical modeling, A/B/n experimentation practices, SQL, and experience independently developing data driven insights. This data scientist will have the opportunity to leverage massive structured, unstructured, transactional, and real-time data sets from a variety of sources, analyze financial and customer usage patterns, and make actionable recommendations to product, marketing, engineering, and business development teams.

In this role the Senior Product Data Scientist will support the entire product development lifecycle from product ideation and opportunity sizing to measurement and experiment design, and from causal analysis and post-launch learning to the next development cycle. Senior Data Scientists at Philo contribute to mentorship and leadership on the Data team whether they are people managers or individual contributors. Individuals with prior experience with people management or an interest in people management will have the opportunity to add that responsibility to their role at Philo.

Responsibilities:
• Build a deep understanding of how subscribers use Philo on each of our streaming platforms, including where they run into problems as well as identifying new features and defining the metrics to evaluate those features
• Own analytics and tracking plans, within several development work streams, from metric definition and data instrumentation design to ongoing reporting and research
• Iteratively improve our experimentation methods and establish best practices for A/B/n experiments
• Establish curated dashboards that will serve as the primary source by which we evaluate the performance of features
• Run queries to support ad-hoc product questions and create Mode dashboards and other visualizations for stakeholders
• Understand user flows, user behaviors, and long-term trends in our data to identify opportunities for new features
• Own your analytics projects, proactively identify issues and opportunities, test hypotheses, and propose solutions
• Collaborate with groups company-wide (e.g. business development, advertising operations, marketing, and support) on KPIs, including lifetime value, retention, win-back, and content consumption metrics

Key Qualifications:
• 10+ years of experience in a Data Science role
• Demonstrated ability to influence product roadmaps and business decisions with data
• Proven expertise in experimental design (including but not limited to A/B testing), principles of causal inference, and statistical techniques
• Experience with relational databases and SQL
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain and present analytical methodology and results to non-technical audiences
• Expert with statistical analysis in either R or Python
• Strong analytics fundamentals – a degree in statistics, economics, a related field, or similar professional experience
• Experience in writing production-quality code in R/Python, productionizing data models and statistical models with tools such as Git, Sagemaker, and dbt, and using software engineering best practices around version control, review, and automated testing

Smart TVs at Philo

The small but growing Smart TV team at Philo is responsible for building our product experience on various Smart TV platforms, beginning with Samsung (Tizen) Smart TVs. The majority of minutes watched on the Philo service are on our “10-foot” platforms, and Smart TVs are an important and growing part of that ecosystem. Philo’s first 10-foot platform was our Roku app, and in the years since we’ve expanded that to include Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV and Chromecast. The Samsung effort is our newest 10’ platform and we’re excited to add more native experiences to our service.

We’re a small autonomous team building apps with high engagement, which collectively are responsible for a huge fraction of the billions of minutes watched on Philo each year. We are passionate about crafting the best possible UX to connect our users with the content they love, providing a seamless viewing experience while surprising them with new features and capabilities. We’re highly focused on optimizing the 10-foot experience and you will directly contribute to that effort. By joining the Smart TV team, you will make a large impact on Philo product design and development.

About you

Are you ready to grow your UI skills beyond the browser and into the living room? If you are a frontend developer looking for a new challenge, join Philo to help us build our Smart TV apps! No previous TV app experience is required -- our Samsung app is built directly on modern web technologies (TypeScript + React), and even our Roku app is built on an in-house React BS framework (recently open sourced!) that leverages React and Redux architecture patterns. If you’re a React hacker who cares deeply about writing quality code, using the latest tools and technologies to push the envelope of what’s possible, then you share the same background as our entire Smart TV dev team and will ramp up quickly in our codebase. We would love to talk to you!

As a Smart TV engineer, you will be responsible for:
• Building the Philo experience on Smart TV devices
• Contributing to UX design decisions using your domain expertise
• Helping the Philo set-top box team grow
• Helping expand Philo’s 10-Foot experience to other platforms

We are looking for candidates who have:
• Experience with React/Redux UI design concepts and modern frontend development practices
• 5-10 years of frontend or UI experience
• 2+ years of React experience

A strong candidate might also have one or more of these:
• Experience with Samsung Tizen, Vizio, LG, or other Smart TV development
• Experience with React Native, Flutter, or using web technologies on any non-browser platform
• Experience with Redux, TypeScript, GraphQL/Apollo.
• Experience with focus management frameworks.
• Experience with BrightScript, SceneGraph, or other Roku APIs and ecosystem.
• Development experience with video playback, cross-device interoperability (e.g. casting), or other 10-foot, connected TV platforms in general (e.g. Roku, Fire TV, Android TV or Apple TV).
