Must be able to work weekends, nights, and different shifts required by seasonal commitment. Must possess a valid Class C driver's license. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check and driver's license check.
Labor & Trades – Grade 16 - pay starting at $840.80/week plus $1.00/hour stipend.

This is a managerial position overseeing design, construction, preventive and routine maintenance, and historic preservation of all City facilities. Work requires long-range facilities planning, management of new construction and renovation projects, and evaluation of energy conservation programs. This position supervises a Director of Project Management, HVAC Coordinator(s), Principal Financial/Administration Officer, and Public Buildings Supervisor. The Director of Public Buildings develops, refines and monitors long range capital improvement plans for City buildings. Oversees mechanical and building trades required to service all City-owned properties to include Island facilities. Oversees maintenance, improvement and construction of waterfront infrastructure including piers, floats, docks and gangways. Approves preventative maintenance plans and profiles for City properties. Reviews and approves specifications and initiates contracts for projects, building repairs and services. Develops and implements security plans for all City-owned buildings. Oversees human resource functions for the Division such as hiring, discipline, safety, employee evaluations and recognition. Oversees the operations budget and makes decisions routinely about prioritization of projects.

The City of Portland PRF Department consists of 68 parks, 30 playgrounds, over 20,000 street trees, 11 community gardens, 50+ miles of trails, 39 athletic fields and various winter recreation areas. The Department operates the 30-hole Riverside Golf Course, Troubh Ice Arena, historic Merrill Auditorium, Ocean Gateway, and the Portland Expo. The Department provides recreational and community programming for tens of thousands of children, adults and seniors of all abilities. The Department manages outside events, races, and concerts throughout the City, and manages facilities and leases of multiple professional minor league sports teams. The Department manages maintenance and capital improvements for all of Portland’s public buildings, piers and waterfront facilities. The Department manages cruise ship arrivals and departures. The Department manages 13 cemeteries with hundreds of burials annually, and oversees plowing of 120 miles of City sidewalks, school parking lots, and park roads. The Deputy Director position will work with the Director to directly oversee daily operations of the Department, with multiple Division Director reports. The Deputy Director will ensure smooth communication and coordination between Divisions and other City Departments. The Deputy will help implement employee safety and training programs, and to be part of employee recognition and performance management. The Deputy will collaborate with dozens of neighborhood associations, parks friends groups, and appointed commissions. The Deputy will serve as part of the leadership team for our department of over 150 permanent employees, and up to 500 seasonal and on-call employees, providing leadership, mentorship, and supervision. The Deputy will serve as the Acting Director in the absence of the Director.
Requirements of Work: Graduation from a college or university with a BS degree in Parks and Recreation Management/Administration or Public Administration or a related degree, or 10 years combined education and experience. Considerable knowledge of the City, State and federal laws governing municipal government. Considerable knowledge of Parks and Recreation field. Proven ability to analyze a variety of personnel and management problems and make recommendations for their solution, and to prepare working procedures. Significant financial experience, including creating and monitoring budgets. Experience working with labor unions. Experience working with diverse populations. Excellent communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department employees, other governmental officials, the City Manager, City Council, Department Heads, members of Boards and Commissions and the general public. Performs skilled, technical and operational work in the planting, care and maintenance of ornamental display gardens, parks and public landscapes, including: annual, perennial and spring bulb display gardens, rose gardens, green infrastructure, rain gardens, green roofs, and raised planters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Operation of landscape tools including: hedge trimmers, tillers, pruners, chain saws, hand saws, mowers, chippers, landscape tractors, and irrigation systems. Complete brush clearing, lawn care, and pruning of trees, shrubs and hedges. Execute weeding, transplanting, mulching, watering and fertilizing of display gardens, green infrastructures, rain gardens, green roofs and raised planters. Monitor and diagnose plant conditions. Adheres to established workplace safety practices, compliance directives and PPE requirements. Participation in emergency work including winter operations and weather events as required. Operation of Sidewalk Plows and other Winter Operations equipment. May work with garden volunteers and responds professionally and courteously to the public. Performs related tasks as assigned.
Requirements of Work: Performance of strenuous manual labor, including frequent lifting and carrying of heavy loads up to 50 lbs. Required to work in all seasons and weather conditions. Operation of power equipment related to landscape work. Possess strength and dexterity to kneel, crouch, stand, and climb to conduct landscape/garden tasks for extended periods. Ability to follow instructions and work with others as part of a team. Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with co-workers, supervisors, contractors and the general public. Ability to read and understand landscape and garden design plans. Basic computer proficiency to record information and basic landscape design.
Training and Experience Required: Experience with various landscape maintenance equipment, tasks, planting and care of woody plants. Knowledge/experience with planting and maintenance of annual, herbaceous and woody plants. Knowledge of IPM and Plant Health Care activities. Must possess a high school diploma or GED, two years of post-secondary education in a job-related field with two years of progressive work experience.
Necessary requirements include a Maine Certified Landscape Professional and a State of Maine Commercial Pesticide Applicators License with category 3A and 6B (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of appointment date) and a valid Maine Class B driver’s license in good standing. Must have and maintain a good driving record. Maine Certified Landscape Professional (desired). Must undergo a pre-employment medical exam and fitness assessment and pass a federally mandated drug test. Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.
Labor & Trades Union position – Grade 18 - Weekly pay starting at $859.20.
