Director, Read and Teach Like Me and Ignite Scholars Programs

Summary

The Director of the Read and Teach Like Me and Ignite Scholars provides academic leadership for the programs and facilitates students' learning such that they understand the theory and praxis of their educational experience as inter-related rather than separate paths. The Read and Teach Like Me is a grand-funded, pilot program that establishes a pipeline for students from marginalized identities to explore teaching as a profession through high school and university-level tutoring internships. Read and Teach Like Me students tutor students in reading and math at identified K-8 schools. Teach Like Me students at John Carroll University (JCU) provide tutoring, mentoring, and college application support to high school students in the Read Like Me program.

In addition, the director will The Ignite Scholars program is an opt-in cohort for JCU students who identify as first-generation college students. Ignite Scholars may also be Teach Like Me students, but the program is open to all majors. Ignite Scholars take core classes together and participate in internships related to their vocational interests. Students are also supported in their social, emotional, and spiritual growth through targeted support for first-generation college students.

This is a full-time, 12-month, grant-funded position that concludes on June 30, 2024. The position may be continued contingent upon available funding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Recruitment and Selection:
• Work with the Enrollment Division to identify and recruit qualified high school students to apply to the Ignite Scholars program.
• Work with participating high schools and Education Department at JCU to identify and recruit students for Read and Teach Like Me program.

Curriculum Implementation:
• Collaborate with JCU faculty to implement a curriculum that supports student achievement in core curriculum courses offered in the Ignite Scholars program.
• Collaborate with partner high schools, CSDI and other departments/offices to identify, obtain and monitor internship opportunities for Read and Teach Like Me and Ignite Scholar students
• Collaborate with partners in high schools and the Education Department at JCU to implement the Read and Teach Like Me curriculum.
• Collaborate with CSSA and CSDI to identify and implement service learning and immersion experiences for Teach Like Me and Ignite Scholar students.

Program Leadership:
• Maintain a recruitment, retention and graduation pipeline for high school students and matriculated JCU students to support their academic, vocational, social and emotional growth

Program Assessment and Dissemination of Results:
• Develop and provide ongoing assessment of the program.
• Work with program faculty to prepare, present and publish research outcomes of the programs.
• Assist the program faculty to convene and lead quarterly meetings with stakeholders at partner high schools and JCU for ongoing program assessment and improvement

Facilitation of Reflective Opportunities:
• Provide opportunities for Ignite Scholars and Teach Like Me students to explore and discern vocational identities as encountered in coursework, internships, service learning, immersion experiences and fellowship events using a variety of reflective practices

Academic Advising and Course Scheduling:
• Collaborate with primary advisors to Ignite Scholars students to ensure completion of required course sequences
• Work with the office of the registrar, associate deans and department chairs to schedule faculty and courses for Ignite Scholars core courses.

Retention and Program Sustainability:
• Actively work to retain students in the Read and Teach Like Me and Ignite Scholars programs in participating high schools and at John Carroll.
• Work with program faculty and staff to identify and secure institutional and third source funding opportunities
• Maintain fiscally appropriate use of funding

Collaboration with Campus and Community Constituents:
• Partner with directors of other mission-based programs and leaders of academic and student development programs.
• Attend community meetings related to the programs

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
• Master's degree in relevant field.
• One to three years of experience in college teaching or student development.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Publisher) and familiarity with the G-suite equivalents.
• Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world

Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with the mission of Jesuit higher education.
• Supervisory experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, social justice, and developing well-educated student leaders who will advocate for a most just society.

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions

This position works on campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.

Physical Requirements

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
