Ignite! Reading teaches kids to read...

Today, 67% of students and 82% of low-income students can’t read at grade level by the end of third grade. That’s when you are supposed to go from learning to read to reading to learn. It’s America’s number one education crisis and we know how to fix it.

Ignite teaches kids to read by providing 15 minutes a day of 1:1 virtual reading instruction. We focus on the reading fundamentals (letters, phonics, and sight words) kids need to master so they can decode a sentence. Our program accelerates reading progress 2.4x and we are disrupting how schools think about reading instruction.

Ignite launched our first school implementation in the fall of 2021. Sixteen months later, we will have grown our number of schools and students 35x.

Ignite! Reading is a mission-driven public benefit corporation. We believe we can do well for our team members and shareholders while we solve one of the nation’s biggest challenges. We believe we will be more successful with a diverse team and are seeking candidates who have lived experience related to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Ignite! Reading is currently hiring Tutor Educators who will join our certification program beginning this July and August and will tutor Ignite students throughout the next academic year.

Our Tutor Educators lead daily, one-on-one, 15 minute virtual tutoring sessions with the same students, 5 days a week, focused on the foundational skills of reading.

Through our PAID certification course in the Science of Reading Instruction, our Tutor Educators gain mastery of instructional skills and teaching best practices grounded in research. While completing certification, you'll work with 5 - 10 students developing strong relationships and gaining a deep understanding of how to teach and inspire your students throughout their journey to become readers. Once certified, successful Ignite Tutor Educators work up to 30 hours a week as a force of change for struggling readers.

Ignite Tutor Educators:
• Demonstrate a commitment to implementing skills learned and feedback received during certification to get better on behalf of the children we serve.
• Cultivate trusting, meaningful relationships with students and schools while forming collaborative relationships with your Ignite! Tutor Educator peers.
• Execute with a high-level of attention to detail and meet deadlines.
• Show up genuinely excited to work with students every day and hold the promises we make to students sacred!
• Understand that learning to read is hard, practice empathy and understanding, hold high expectations for their students, and never ever give up on them
• Arrive on time to all tutoring sessions, fulfill all duties associated with your role while representing the Ignite! Reading program with the highest degree of professionalism.
• Complete our paid 60+ hour certification class and gain mastery of the Science of Reading, our assessment systems, program operations, and our research-based, foundational skills curriculum.

Tutors are paid $17.50/per hour while you are successfully completing your certification course. Once certified, tutors begin earning $20/per hour.

Before you apply, read the requirements below very carefully to understand the time commitments we expect of tutors.

Our Certification Process:

We require that hired tutors complete a 9-week certification class that includes 6 weeks of practicum during which you will tutor 6 -10 students.

Below you’ll find a description of the time required for the certification class and the practicum.

Certification Class:
• Successful applicants will have three certification course options to choose from:
• July 24th - September 22nd, 2023
• August 21st - October 20th, 2023
• September 11th, - November 10th, 2023
• All classes are Monday - Friday, 5 days a week at the same time each day. We will offer several class times to choose from.
• Tutors commit to 2 hour classes for the first 3 weeks and 1 hour classes plus a minimum of 1.5 hours of tutoring in practicum for the remaining 6 weeks of the course.
• The certification course consists of both synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences. Tutors will be in live synchronous classes 3 days a week and completing asynchronous learning 2 days a week.

Practicum: After you have completed the first 3 weeks of the certification course, your class time will be reduced to one hour a day. To successfully complete your practicum, you will need to provide a minimum of 3 hours a day of availability between 8:00am and 5:00pm EST in addition to your certification class providing us adequate options for scheduling your students, five days a week, at the same times each day. You may choose the tutoring times you are available.
