Position Description
The Department of Architecture, in the Division of Architecture +
Design, at the Rhode Island School of Design ( RISD ), invites
applications for two full-time faculty appointments at the rank of
Assistant/Associate Professor, to commence fall 2023. Rank will be
dependent on professional status and teaching experience.
RISD recognizes principles of social equity, diversity, and
inclusion as fundamental to its academic mission as an art and
design school. We understand these principles to require ongoing
attention to differential embodied experience and expansion of the
forms of knowledge from which our curricula originate. RISD is
engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and
would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional
experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and
learning environments. We seek applicants whose teaching and
professional work (creative practice and/or academic scholarship)
attends to embodied difference as intersectional and centers on
bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities.
We encourage applicants from traditionally underrepresented
communities including Native American peoples, Black and Indigenous
peoples of color, Latinx, people who identify as LGBTQIA+,
veterans, and persons with disabilities.
The department seeks qualified individuals to offer graduate and
undergraduate-level instruction in architectural design. These are
design-plus positions and successful candidates will teach design
studios at core, advanced, and thesis levels, in addition to
offering foundational and advanced courses based on a particular
area of their expertise.
The department is particularly interested in applicants with deep
knowledge and applied experience in architectural technology, as
well as applicants with expertise and an active practice engaged in
history/theory/criticism of architecture.
The architectural technology undergraduate and graduate curriculum
emphasizes the importance of close observation of the physical
world, iterative exploration of material application, and applied
construction and documentation methods. Successful candidates must
be capable of teaching or team-teaching courses such
asPhenomena,Architectural
Anatomy,Architectural Design,Environmental
Design,Structural Design,Enclosure Design,
andBuilding Assembly and Systems Design.
The history/theory/criticism undergraduate and graduate curriculum
introduces key ideas, forces, and techniques that have shaped the
discipline of architecture through the ages, emphasizing both
historical and global interconnectedness, recurrent conflicts, and
what it means to engage, cultivate, and disseminate architectural
ideas, knowledge, debates, and discourse. Successful candidates
must be capable of teaching or team-teaching courses such
asModern Architecture,World
Architecture,Graduate Seminar: Making
Discourse,Graduate Seminar: Disciplinarity,
andThesis. Please see https://www.risd.edu/academics/architecture/courses
for more information regarding both curricula.
Current areas of Architecture faculty research and practice
include: the practice of drawing, innovative models of professional
practice, actively engaging questions of environmental and material
ethics, design-build, writing and criticism, material engagement,
digital and manual representation, and architectural history.
Please see https://www.risd.edu/academics/architecture/faculty
for more information.
The department values applicants with a strong commitment to
professional and creative architectural practice, a clear and
ambitious research agenda, experience with specific research
methodologies, and an interest in transdisciplinary projects. Built
upon the institutional commitment to shape just societies, lead in
the charge to construct sustainable futures, and champion new ways
of making and knowing, the department seeks a colleague whose work
and teaching advances RISD’s commitments to social equity,
diversity, and inclusion in matters of racial, social, and
environmental justice.
The department seeks applicants with: (1) a demonstrated record of
scholarship and/or creative practice that aligns with RISD’s Social
Equity and Inclusion ( SEI ) mission, (2) evidence of successful,
innovative, and collaborative teaching at the college level that
addresses the inequalities endemic to social structures and the
built environment, (3) demonstrated experience in developing and
shaping architectural curricula, and (4) academic leadership
experience and/or interest.
Required Qualifications
• A professional degree in architecture or an allied discipline
(B.Arch, M.Arch, or equivalent)
• A professional practice and/or licensure in architecture.
• A demonstrated record of teaching studios, lectures, and other
courses in their area of expertise.
• Ability to support a globally and culturally diverse body of
students in development of their design, critical thinking, and
leadership skills.
• A creative practice and/or teaching record that advances
diversity, equity, and inclusion, and engages works, cultures, and
bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented
communities.
• A clear research agenda supported by evidence of scholarly or
design outcomes, which can be demonstrated through publications,
curated exhibitions, installations, and/or built work.
• A demonstrated teaching and/or professional record that
exemplifies inclusionary practice.

Preferred Qualifications
• An advanced specialized degree (postgraduate, PhD) or strong
evidence of contributions to one’s area of expertise (e.g.
publications, exhibitions, installations, built work).
• Professional experience and expertise in Building Science or
Material Sustainability.
• As teaching is key to the RISD experience, the department seeks
a colleague whose practice or scholarly agendas work in tandem with
their teaching (i.e. by evidencing how one’s area of expertise
relates to curricular and pedagogical materials).
• Experience or demonstrated interest in cross-disciplinary
teaching as it relates to one’s area of expertise. Reflections on
collaboration (e.g. team-teaching or professional partnerships) are
strongly encouraged.
• Fluency in digital design media, including tools and software,
as well as experience integrating emerging technologies or mediums
with studio, seminar, and/or lecture teaching.
Department /RISD Description
Rhode Island School of Design ( RISD ) is an undergraduate and
graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,500
graduate and undergraduate students. RISD supports faculty
professional practice with sabbaticals, pre-critical review leave,
conference funds, and professional development grants. RISD has a
critical review process, which is very similar to the tenure
process. For more information about RISD, please visit
www.risd.edu.
RISD Architecture is one of the college’s large departments with
290 students enrolled in two degree paths: a five-year B.Arch and a
three-year M.Arch (with the possibility of advanced standing for
completion of this graduate degree in two years). We are currently
a faculty of 11 full-time, 6 visiting professors, and about 30
part-time members. We are fortunate to be one of a few departments
of architecture in this country housed within a preeminent college
of the arts. We approach architecture as a cultural discipline and
teach design through experimentation, iteration, and critique. The
context of the institution supports this approach, as the
exploration of and experimentation with various materials and media
serve the development and dissemination of architectural ideas for
our students.
Central to the mission of our department, and our college, is a
commitment to making racial, social, and environmental justice
foundational to the education of the architect. As a faculty, we
are actively engaged in decolonizing our curriculum and proactively
addressing canonical silences and omissions through the recovery of
marginalized historical narratives and precedents and
experimentation and innovation across a wide range of subjects,
including: materials, construction methodologies, planning,
theories of nature, and the historical positioning of the
discipline in the Anthropocene. RISD has an activist student
culture driving our community’s desire to make these important and
substantive changes in the curriculum. Our students are engaged and
creative, and upon graduating they become advocates for a resilient
built environment and for the communities that architecture has
historically underserved. We seek faculty to participate in the
creation of new approaches and new knowledge through
cross-disciplinary collaboration and studio exploration.
Faculty Responsibilities
The full-time faculty teaching load is six teaching units a year.
Full-time faculty in architecture typically teach four courses a
year, a combination of studios (2 teaching units each), seminars (1
teaching unit each), and lectures (1 teaching unit each). In
addition to teaching commitments, full-time faculty are expected to
maintain a dynamic professional practice, serve on college-wide
committees, advise students, participate in curriculum development
and other departmental activities and projects, and contribute to
the vibrancy of the intellectual life of the college. RISD supports
faculty professional practice with sabbaticals, pre-critical review
leave, conference funds, and professional development grants.

• A demonstrated record of inclusive leadership.

Department /RISD Description
Rhode Island School of Design ( RISD ) is an undergraduate and
graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,500
graduate and undergraduate students. RISD supports faculty
professional practice with sabbaticals, pre-critical review leave,
conference funds, and professional development grants. RISD has a
critical review process, which is very similar to the tenure
process. For more information about RISD, please visit
www.risd.edu.
Apparel Design at RISD fosters a creative practice rooted in
embodied tactile materiality and ethical consciousness. The
curriculum is founded on craftsmanship—research, technical skill
building, detailing, gesture, aesthetic, and form—that are
responsive to individuals and contexts. The mission of the Apparel
Design Department is to prepare students to be conscious leaders
with global relevance—resourceful, feeling thinkers who approach
clothing as a platform for diverse cultural dialogue. Through
multidisciplinary approaches, students engage in the generation and
sharing of not only dress and adornment, but also the notion of
clothing and the systems for making it. The Department recognizes
that to address the demands and opportunities of the twenty-first
century, the future designer will be able to incorporate knowledge
of traditional forms and practices embedded in the craft of making,
while also engaging change advocacy to address unethical practices
driven by the textile and fashion industries.
Apparel Design addresses and responds to the critical
challenges of our time and works toward positive and sustainable
change. As a challenge to the relentless cycle of fashion, we slow
down, rethink, and reinvent. The Department fosters designers who
want to critically question the industry and/or pursue allied or
independent careers. Working in spacious studios, an engaged and
individualized approach to teaching is possible due to the high
faculty to student ratio. Students develop a range of conceptual
and technical skills, explorations into identity/identities and
contexts, and progress from the craft of basic to advanced pattern
drafting, draping, construction, and machine knitwear. Students
also participate in industry internships.
Faculty Responsibilities
The full-time faculty teaching load is six teaching units a year.
In addition to teaching, full-time faculty are expected to maintain
a dynamic professional practice, serve on college committees,
advise students, participate in curriculum development and other
departmental activities and projects, and contribute to the
vibrancy of the intellectual life of the college.

Title
Assistant or Associate Professor, Apparel Design
Department
Apparel Design
Division
Architecture & Design
Employment Type
Full-Time
Critical Review Track (similar to tenure track)
Yes
Position Description
The Department of Apparel Design, in the Division of Architecture
and Design, at the Rhode Island School of Design ( RISD ), invites
applications for a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of
Assistant /Associate Professor, to commence fall 2023. Rank will be
dependent on professional status and teaching experience.
RISD recognizes principles of social equity, diversity, and
inclusion as fundamental to its academic mission as an art and
design school. We understand these principles to require ongoing
attention to differential embodied experience and expansion of the
forms of knowledge from which our curricula originate. RISD is
engaged in the collective work of institutional transformation and
would value applicants whose pedagogical and professional
experiences have prepared them to foster equitable teaching and
learning environments. We seek applicants whose teaching and
professional work (creative practice and/or academic scholarship)
attends to embodied difference as intersectional and centers on
bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities.
We encourage applicants from traditionally underrepresented
communities including Native American peoples, Black and Indigenous
peoples of color, Latinx, people who identify as LGBTQIA+,
veterans, and persons with disabilities.
The department seeks candidates engaged in a
contemporary practice that contributes to reimagining the field of
clothing, fashion and adornment. We are particularly interested in
candidates who are able to articulate a progressive vision for
inspired leadership and knowledge exchange within an academic
department and who have a proven record as an effective studio
teacher and critic/mentor. Working as part of a creative team of
faculty, candidates should possess the ability and desire to
critique fashion as an industry and discipline and collaborate with
colleagues across disciplines with distinct and diverse practices,
skills, and experiences. Both within apparel/fashion and in
collaboration with other disciplines, candidates must possess the
ability to teach a range of courses, from research and concept
ideation to the creation of garments, including construction,
draping and drafting. We welcome candidates whose experience in
teaching, scholarship, professional practice, or service has
prepared them to contribute to our commitment to work towards
positive and sustainable change. Preference will be given to
candidates with a vision for apparel/fashion design education and
