Who we are
Our company has its roots in the Python data science community. Our leaders have had significant involvement in the creation and maintenance of NumPy, SciPy, Jupyter, Spyder, Dask, Conda, Numba, Anaconda and PyData NumFOCUS. Our mission is to connect companies to open-source communities to create sustainable solutions that benefit the whole ecosystem...
We accomplish this mission by providing various services ranging from open-source software development to training and consulting. We believe in a culture of do-ers, learners, and collaborators. We are looking for people who are motivated, humble, curious, and respectful of others.
Our not-for-profit mission at Quansight Labs is to provide a core development team for the PyData ecosystem and sustain community-driven open-source software. We do this with support from our sibling services organisation, Quansight, by applying for grants and working with companies who pay for our innovative Community Work Orders. Quansight Labs members primarily work directly on open-source projects but may spend up to 50% of their time working on open-source-related consulting projects.
What's important to us:
We are building a company of people who care deeply about open-source projects and communities and their long-term sustainability. Our team is geographically distributed, and working in the open is the norm.
Summary
We are seeking an experienced Frontend Engineer to join Quansight Labs and our mission of supporting the PyData open-source ecosystem. As a Frontend Engineer in the Accessibility practice, you will work across our internal web-related projects and contribute to the community-driven open-source projects supported by Quansight Labs. We are seeking engineers who are passionate about web development, open source, and accessibility and who possess a collaborative and community-first mindset.
Our primary focus areas are scientific computing and the Python ecosystem. However, we do not expect candidates to come from a STEM background or have previously worked with the Python language or community.
You can also check out our Quansight Labs Annual Report to gain more insight into the type of work we do and our approach to open-source sustainability: https://labs.quansight.org/annual-reports/quansight-labs-annual-report-2022.pdf
In this position, you'll get to
• Collaborate with other developers and designers in a global, distributed, open-source development team.
• Work on consulting projects for some of our clients.
• Participate in design and code reviews.
• Help up-skill engineers within the organization and our community through code reviews, giving talks, and/or writing documentation.
• Build intuitive and accessible user interfaces and websites.
• Work on and enforce standards around accessibility and internationalisation for our internal sites and projects within the open-source ecosystem.
• Advocate for accessibility standards and help improve our practices and products with an accessibility and usability-first mindset.
• Contribute to open-source projects within the PyData and JavaScript ecosystem.
• Advocate for the disabled community’s and our users’ needs throughout our design and development processes.
Position RequirementsRequired:
• Expertise in front-end development with HTML and CSS.
• Expertise in JavaScript and at least one of its frameworks (preferably React or VueJS).
• Experience and proficiency with Node.js
• Knowledge of static website generators such as Next.JS, Gatsby, Hugo, Eleventy or others.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2 accessibility standards and the ability to create products that are accessible to disabled users
• Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the entire software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, version control (Git), testing and CI/CD.
• Comfortable working remotely with a global team distributed across many time zones.
• Comfortable working independently and reaching out for cross-team feedback and support as needed.
• Comfortable working on multiple teams and projects at once.
• Ability to provide and constructively receive feedback.
Bonus points (not required, but these would be a great advantage)
• Experience with accessibility audits.
• Practical experience with assistive technologies (like JAWS, VoiceOver, Dragon, NaturallySpeaking).
• Experience with automated testing (ideally with tools like axe-core, Jest, pa11y or Playwright).
• Experience working on open-source projects or in partnership with community contributors or volunteers.
• Experience working on a product with a culturally diverse user community.
• Interest in or experience sustaining inclusive and safe communities.
• An appreciation for the importance of good documentation.
• Experience building or contributing to JavaScript developer tools and frameworks.
Please keep in mind that we are describing the background we imagine would best fit the role. Even if you don’t meet all the requirements and are confident that you are up for the task, we want to get to know you!
Candidate journey
• Application: Once you have applied, a recruiter will review your application to determine if your work experience and skills align with the necessary competencies of this position. This recruiter will be in touch to schedule some time to connect if they determine that you could be a good fit for Quansight.
• HR interview: This is an opportunity to get to know each other. We will tell you a little more about who we are, and we look forward to hearing about your past experiences and what you are looking for in your next role. We want to know why you are interested in joining us and what questions you have about our team and mission. This will be scheduled as a 30-minute Google Meet.
• Interview loop: If you and your recruiter still feel you could be well-suited for this position following your call, we will arrange our interview loop with some team members. This will allow you to learn more about the team and the organization and for us to gain a deeper understanding of your skills and experience. For this particular role, the interview loop is as follows:
• Hiring manager interview: in this one-hour interview, you will meet the hiring manager for this position. Questions in this interview will focus on your career, how you handle certain situations and your general approach to collaboration and work. We also factor in time for you to ask questions about the role and the organization.
• Technical interviews: we will schedule two separate interviews with Quansight team members (these can be potential teammates or cross-functional team members, i.e. designers and engineers). These interviews will center around coding, system design principles or how to approach tasks we commonly deal with in our accessibility and frontend practices.
• Following the completion of all interviews, our hiring team will make a final decision, and the recruiter will be in touch to share the outcome of your interviews. If the team wants to move forward, the recruiter will discuss this and the details of our proposed offer with you.
Why should you join?
You'll become essential to a small, collaborative, fully distributed accessibility and engineering team. We strive to provide a working environment that gives you room to learn and grow.
Quansight draws from experience in many large open-source communities over the years. Because these communities operate remotely and strive to be as inclusive and participatory as possible, they must also strive to be more transparent and systematic in communicating, sharing information, and working. We are building a culture at Quansight that follows and builds upon these principles.
We offer flexibility in work times and locations, and vacation time is not just encouraged but celebrated and enforced.
We offer competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, vision, dental, 401K, a comprehensive sick policy and parental leave, and flexible paid time off.
Where applicable, if you are located outside the United States, we will work with you to get similar benefits according to your geographical context.
Where can we hire?
Our engineering team is entirely remote. Our headquarters are in Austin, Texas, and a good portion of our team is U.S. based. We also have a significant presence in Europe, South America, and Asia. We will consider applicants anywhere (overlap with U.S. and Europe time zones is preferred).
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
Quansight understands that valuing diverse creative practices and forms of knowledge is crucial to and enriches the company’s core mission. We encourage applications from everyone, including members of all equity-seeking communities, such as (but certainly not limited to) women, racialized and Indigenous persons, disabled people, persons of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions.
We are an equal opportunity employer - all qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for recruitment, interviews, employment, training, compensation, promotion, and related activities. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, gender identity, gender expression, color, national origin, pregnancy, ancestry, domestic partner status, disability, sexual orientation, age, genetic predisposition, medical condition, marital status, citizenship status, military or veteran status, or any other basis covered by applicable laws. Quansight will not tolerate discrimination or harassment based on these characteristics or any other unlawful behavior, conduct, or purpose Show more details...
