Scope: Each of our 64 local Chapters is responsible for raising a significant amount of their annual budget. The Associate Director, Chapter Fundraising plays a crucial role in helping Sierra Club Chapters raise the money they need by giving them advice on how to run their programs more efficiently and effectively. More than anything else, they will:
• Serve as the lead coach/consultant to Chapter leaders who need strategic and tactical advice. Their advice to individual Chapters will help build effective, efficient fundraising programs focusing on building authentic funder relationships.
• Build and facilitate 4-6 small cohorts of fundraising leaders from different Chapters. They will facilitate brainstorming, problem-solving, and resource-sharing within these groups.
• Assist the Senior Director of Chapter Fundraising with building more meaningful collaboration between Chapter leaders and the staff of the Advancement Department, the national organization's fundraising team, particularly with regard to major gift work.
In order to be successful, the Associate Director, Chapter Fundraising must be an experienced fundraising generalist with a strong understanding of the strategies available to grow a small organization's donor base, enhance a fundraising program's efficiency, and take advantage of middle-level and major gift opportunities. This position will serve as a major point of contact for staff involved in all aspects of Chapter fundraising, will interact with many departments across the Sierra Club, and will meet with external funders.
This position requires an ability to travel. While not extensive, you need to be willing to travel occasionally (8-12 times a year) for on-site Chapter visits or meetings.
Job Activities Include But Are Not Limited To
• Coaching Chapter leaders with strategic and tactical advice to improve fundraising performance. Consults and advises Chapter leaders on fundraising strategy and program implementation at individual Chapters. This may include site visits and in-person coaching.
• Leading the effort to develop and execute Chapter fundraising cohorts. Leads the design, rollout, and initial execution of an effort to increase peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing across 4 to 6 small groups of Chapters.
• Delivering a portion of the Chapter Fundraising Team's training curriculum. Working with the rest of the Chapter fundraising team, establishes an annual training calendar and leads approximately one-third of those trainings.
• Identifying, creating, and maintaining centralized resources for Chapter fundraising. Working with the rest of the Chapter Fundraising Team, finds ways to create new or improve on the existing on-demand resources that help Chapters raise money (e.g., examples of great thank-you notes, lists of strategies to find new funders).
• Coaching Chapters on ways to leverage volunteer involvement with fundraising. Works with volunteers and staff leaders to create opportunities for volunteers to participate in fundraising—particularly at the board level.
• Collaborating with leaders in our Advancement Department to facilitate coordination between major gift staff, mid-level officers, and Chapter leaders. Facilitates collaboration between Chapter fundraisers and the national organization's fundraising team, particularly with major gift work.
• Representing the Chapter Fundraising Team in collaborative spaces across the organization. Regularly attend meetings within the department or larger organization to share our team's perspective and elevate the needs of Chapter fundraisers.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following skills, experience and competencies:
• Extensive experience coordinating and implementing fundraising programs, preferably in a small non-profit. Your ability to provide sound advice to Chapter Directors, fundraising staff, and volunteer leaders based on your own experience and study is crucial in this role.
• A deep understanding of how to solicit and recruit small, mid-level, and major gift funders. You must be able to understand and teach how a small non-profit organization must blend multiple fundraising strategies targeting many levels of giving in order to meet its fundraising goals.
• Coaching expertise. You will be working with individuals and small teams that need your advice, assistance, and accountability. Successful coaching skills are a must.
