Overview:

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer or Scientist who will focus on software and hardware development and integration, particularly for signal processing applications. This position resides in the Cyber Sensing and Analytics Group in the Cyber Resilience & Intelligence Division, National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The US base salary range for this full-time position is $40,000 to $50,000 plus employee stock options and benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Summary:

The Signal Integrity Engineer will play a critical role in the planning of digital PCB designs, simulation, lab verification, and troubleshooting signal integrity issues on completed designs. They will also be expected to help with design review of critical PCBs for signal integrity concerns. Good communications skills and ability to work with physically dispersed teams is a strong requirement.

Skills Experience Requirements:
• 8+ years experience with High Speed Signal Delivery Design and Evaluation. This includes both signal integrity within a PCB and off the board (board to board connectors, ribbon cables, coaxial cable, etc.).
• PCB design fundamentals (single ended and differential signals)
• Signal loss • Impedance control • Crosstalk (near end and far end)
• Familiar with single-ended and differential signaling up to 50Gbps
• Familiar working with component models (touchstone files) and cascading models to generate complete system models for simulation
• Simulation of digital interfaces (examples would be FPGA to DRAM, SERDES interfaces)
• Simulation of analog paths through a combination of PCB, connector, and cable (examples would be signal driver to DUT)
• Very familiar with 2D and 3D simulation tools (examples include ADS, ANSYS HFSS, Sigrity)
• Electrical length calculations for signal matching
• Familiar with looking at signals in both frequency (S-parameter) and time domain and understand how to interpret results when it comes to suitability for a particular application.
• Familiar with generating and interpreting data-eye diagrams up to 50Gbps: NRZ and PAM4
• Familiar with Allegro or similar layout tool and schematics
• PCB Stack up design and familiar with fabrication limitations and cost trade-offs
• High Frequency board material experience
• Significant experience with measuring signal performance in the lab: TDR measurements and VNA measurements
• Able to develop test fixtures for making measurements (both custom design test boards as well as making "ad hoc" probing solutions to troubleshoot existing PCBs)
• Familiar with the cost vs performance tradeoffs when designing signal paths as cost is key design constraint
• Experience with flex circuit design for high speed signaling

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs skilled work in installation and preventative and corrective maintenance on all traffic signal equipment including poles, mast arms, signal heads, underground and overhead electrical wire runs, pull boxes, controller cabinets, MMUs, controllers, UPS systems, school flasher beacons, pedestrian push button activated systems, fiber optic cable and traffic network components.

Installs power meter pedestals and breaker panels supplying power to traffic assets.

Performs annual certification of all malfunction monitor units

Installs and maintains emergency vehicle detection.

Installs and maintains many types of vehicle detection systems

Setup, install and maintains PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) traffic cameras.

Setup, install and maintain all traffic network switches and devices.

Setup, install and maintain wireless spread spectrum network radios.

Monitors performance of traffic devices using a traffic management system (Econolite Centracs).

Document and maintain accurate records of activities, problems, and repairs relating to traffic signals, signs, and markings.

Performs underground locates of traffic signal wiring, communications lines, fiber optic lines during and after business hours for Traffic.

Set up and maintain traffic control in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Performs maintenance and repairs to sidewalk decorative lighting.

Installs, repairs and maintains traffic owned overhead luminaire lighting.

Performs maintenance, installation and programing to all city owned school flasher beacons.

Performs maintenance and installation to all city owned pedestrian activated push button systems.

Performs maintenance, installation and programming to all city owned electronic speed limit signs.

Performs fabrication, installation and maintenance of all traffic signs and sign post.

Designs and plots signs using Gerber OMEGA design software and Graphtec cutting plotter.

Assists with managing shop inventory.

Fabricates and installs permanent and temporary signage for special events.

Performs lane marking layout, installation, removal, and painting of pavement markings such as stop bars, crosswalks, turn arrows, lane lines and artistic crosswalks.

Installs, maintains, and removes pavement marking tape, pre-formed thermoplastic, and waterborne paint.

Operates a custom sign truck.

Operates an aerial lift/bucket truck.

Operates and maintains painting equipment.

Operates and maintains roadway grinding equipment.

Participates in a 24-hour on-call rotation.

Installs and maintains copper twisted pair cable, fiber optic communications cables, and wireless communications equipment.

Maintains proper operation of school zone safety flashers.

Assists with maintaining inventory of traffic Signal equipment and related materials.

Responds to after hour emergencies when on-call. Repairs malfunctioning, damaged, or inoperable traffic control devices.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education: High School Education or GED

Work Experience: Preferred, 2 years of Traffic signal experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

Certifications and/or Licensures: IMSA Work Zone Safety Certification (within 6 months of hire)

IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I preferred (or obtain within 12 months of employment)

MSA Signs & Markings Technician level I preferred (or obtain within 18 month of employment)

ATSSA TCT or equivalent (or obtain within 18 months of employment)

IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II Field preferred (or obtain within 24 months)

IMSA Roadway lighting Technician Level I (or obtain within 24 months of employment)

Required Driver's License:Class B CDL within 6 months of hire

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

Skills and Abilities

Computer Skills - Strong skills needed to test and program traffic signal equipment and design traffic signs. Strong skills needed to maintain Excel documents and track assets in Cartegraph.

Communication - Strong skills needed to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, supervisors, coworkers, city employees, vendor representatives, community organizations, other government agencies, and the general public.

Basic writing skills needed to report malfunction condition and status for manufacturer repair.

Analytical - Strong skills needed for fault isolation in field maintenance, and for the design and application of traffic signal modifications.

Mechanical - Strong skills needed to operate tools used for traffic signal construction, maintenance with live voltage, and traffic sign installation.

Ability to operate aerial lifts, drill press, pneumatic tools, and jackhammer.

Mathematical - Basic skills needed for estimating materials, designing traffic signs, and laying out pavement markings.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed primarily outdoors and frequently in the shop. The employee is exposed to all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold conditions. Also exposed to various environmental conditions which may include excessive noise, dust, fumes, street traffic and materials used in traffic maintenance such as paint and chemicals.

Job Summary

The Signals and Communications Apprentice (S&C) - United States (US) is responsible for installing, repairing, testing, and maintaining various signals and communications systems and apparatuses, including railway signaling systems, wayside information systems, and highway grade crossing protection systems.
Major Responsibilities
• Install, repair, maintain, test, and inspect signal systems and apparatus, including automatic blocks, traffic controls, train stops, train controls, cab signals, and interlocking systems
• Perform construction duties, including digging holes and trenches to lay cables, wiring apparatus, setting piers, and installing equipment
• Perform highway grade crossing protection and automatic classification yards
• Use a wide variety of hand tools, bonding rail, and testing signal plans, including on track high-rail equipment and test instruments to bury cable and wire equipment
• Ensure a safe working environment by following CN's safety policies and procedures
Working Conditions
• Must be available for shift work, including weekends and nights
• Work is performed outdoors, sometimes in extreme weather conditions and on uneven terrain and surfaces
• Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise, and vibrations

Training

The incumbent receives 3 weeks classroom training sessions at 40 hours per week at the CN Campus during the one-year apprentice training program. The training is primarily on health and safety rules, standard codes of practice, installation methods, testing and maintenance procedures, and equipment familiarization. Successful completion of the classroom training is mandatory to work as a Signal Maintainer. Once qualified, the role is subject to promotion as a Signals and Communications Maintainer and protect seniority as vacancies arise.

This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
