Your New Opportunity at The SMH

We are seeking a deputy news director at The Sydney Morning Herald.

The successful candidate will be a quick thinker with sharp news judgment and strong editing, rewriting and production skills. You will have the ability to manage complex and long-term projects as well as juggle multiple tasks at once to co-ordinate the coverage of breaking news events.

The job requires an ability to think laterally, spot legal red flags, and you will need to lead the Sydney newsroom when required. Reporting to the news director, the role also involves supporting them in the smooth running and management of a broad team, including doing some administration.

Day to day you will:
• Create and manage unique content across all platforms of The Sydney Morning Herald, with a primary focus on digital;
• Work closely with other topics, leading and executing key digital strategies;
• Use audience metrics and other data to inform content planning and strategy;
• Attend and contribute to daily news conferences as required;
• Co-ordinate breaking news coverage as required
• Be able to commission engaging visuals for digital platforms;
• Supervise and instruct reporters and liaise with multiple platform editors;
• Help manage the roster for the Sydney news team;
• Be part of a 24/7 newsroom, with shifts that include regular evening and weekend work

As a Junior Financial/Business Analyst you will be part of the team providing financial management and support to Nine’s News and Current affairs departments. These departments produce Nine’s nationwide local news bulletins, A Current Affair, Today, Today Extra and 60 Minutes. They also look after the Canberra, Los Angeles and London news bureaus.

The members of the News and Current Affairs team are highly experienced, passionate and engaged, and are committed to the mentoring and career development of the Junior Analyst. • Providing financial and analytical support to the Finance Manager – News & CA, and Senior Business Analyst

Qualifications

You will be someone who enjoys the variety and challenge of working in a role where things are not always black and white. You will be comfortable operating in a fast paced, constantly changing environment, and motivated by opportunities for continual learning and development. You thrive under pressure and can remain calm and focussed when working to tight deadlines and managing competing priorities.

Here’s what we would like you to bring:
• Tertiary Qualifications and membership of a professional accounting body such as CPA Australia
• Some experience in a financial or accountant role
• The ability to make recommendations to achieve desired business objectives
• Self-motivation and the ability to demonstrates initiative
• The ability to work collaboratively in a team under tight deadlines
• Strong attention to detail

Media industry experience is not essential, although it would be extremely beneficial. As would skills in Excel (advanced), D365 and TM1.
