Must be physically able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work involves climbing, bending and stooping for short periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 5 to 10 pounds. Requires the ability to hear, speak and/or signal people to exchange information. Requires the ability to read and write required reports and records, using proper format. To assist bus drivers in maintaining proper student behavior on the bus and assuring safety of children while entering, riding, and departing the bus.
Qualifications:
• High School Diploma
• Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Perform and pass the State Department of Education school bus physical skills evaluation.
• Class B CDL with P and S endorsement
• SC Department of Education School Certificate
GENERAL SUMMARY:
To assist bus drivers in maintaining proper student behavior on the bus and assuring safety of children while entering, riding, and departing the bus. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsement and certified through SC Department of Education as a school bus driver to serve as a "back-up/standby" driver to fill in on an "as needed" basis.
Performance Responsibilities:
• Manage the safety, comfort and behavior of all student bus riders.
• Assist students while loading and unloading and insure that all passengers are in assigned seats and properly secured by seat belt, seat restraint, car seat, etc.
• Operate the wheelchair lift for loading and unloading; properly secure wheelchair.
• Learn the assigned bus route to assist substitute driver as needed.
• Report student injury or illness to transportation department supervisor.
• Ensure that all students get off at the assigned school or bus stop.
• Assist driver with student attendance records.
• Project a positive and professional image to the school district and community.
• Performing other tasks and responsibilities that may be assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is conducted primarily on a school bus where one is required to ride in varying weather conditions which means exposure to conditions such as heat, cold, rain, humidity, etc., and at times to travel on poor road conditions. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and awareness, and the supervision of children. Must perform all operations required to safely drive or ride in a school vehicle, including bending, twisting or stretching to use vehicle equipment, to adjust and look in all mirrors to observe passengers and road for traffic; Must be able to utilize a two-way radio for communications. Routine local travel is required in the transport of students to and from school; no overnight travel is required.
Physical Performance Standards:
• Climb school bus steps 3 times in 30 seconds
• Open and close a manual bus door 3 times in 20 seconds
• Exit the vehicle via the emergency door in 20 seconds
• Drag a 125-pound object 30 feet in 30 seconds.
Drivers must also be able to:
• Alternate between accelerator and service brake 10 times in 10 seconds
• Press and hold the service brake for 60 seconds.
