The Springer Medicine & Life Science journals portfolio consists of proprietary, society-partnered and society-owned Transformative and OA Journal titles. Publishers within the group work closely with Editors-in-Chief, editorial offices and society partners to ensure their portfolios are meeting the needs of our authors and readers, as well as developing their titles in-line with Springer Nature objectives. Purpose of the Role
The Publisher is the primary publishing contact for their journals and takes responsibility for growing and developing a portfolio of Transformative/OA Journals. Communication is a key part of this role, developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with our stakeholders (Editors, authors, reviewers, and societies).
The role requires close liaison with other departments and also involves effective project management to achieve specific goals. The aims are to optimize the publishing service, utilize commercial opportunities and to increase market share of publications and citations. The Publisher cascades business and team-wide objectives into journal development actions and provides experience and information to help shape the strategy of the portfolio.
Responsibilities:
Relationship with external partners

• Maximizing journal visibility through appropriate promotion (e.g. blogs, press releases, social media etc.)
• Monitor peer review performance to optimize manuscript flow. Work with the Editorial Office as well as internal and external Editors to resolve any delays.
• Ensure correct filing of documents and correct data entry into relevant systems and databases to enable monitoring of renewal dates, payments, and that all journal information (e.g. on website and marketing material) is kept up to date
• Handling of ethical queries in line with COPE Guidelines
• Represent journals at scientific conferences when required
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree level, preferably with a scientific background
• 3-4 years of experience of managing a portfolio of journals in academic publishing

Reporting to the Head of Legal (United States), this junior role supports the development of best-in-class internal legal support for North America as part of a proactive and agile licensing, publishing, and commercial team. The Legal Counsel also plays a crucial role in collaborating with colleagues in the global legal organization to support Springer Nature businesses and functions through a legal business partner approach. This junior role also has the potential to expand over time to include counseling editorial team on publishing matters and support for other segments of the business.
Responsibilities:
• Play an essential role in working with the Senior Legal Counsel to support the drafting and negotiation of license agreements for North American customers.
• Support the US Sales team on site licensing to public and private institutions. Provide support in connection with the sales and licensing workflow globally.
• Review, draft, negotiate and advise on a broad range of commercial contracts, in consultation with internal stakeholders and the Head of Legal, which could include agreements for the acquisition and exploitation of intellectual property rights (including a variety of publishing contracts).
• Be an influential, trusted advisor and legal business partner to Springer Nature businesses by providing commercial and strategic advice sensitive to the company's global business strategy.
• Provide advice at all levels of the organization, at both an executive and operational level, which is accessible, commercially sensitive, and technically strong across a full range of legal issues (e.g., commercial contracts, intellectual property, data privacy, licensing).
• Contribute to the Legal team's strategy and knowledge development.
• Any other duties that can reasonably be expected or defined by the Head of Legal.
Experience, skills, and qualifications:
Essential:
• Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school
• Admitted Attorney & Member in Good Standing of New York State Bar or admitted to any State bar and licensed as in-house counsel in New York
• A minimum of 3+ years experience at a law firm or in-house with general corporate/commercial/IP matters
• Strong commercial awareness
• The ability to manage organizational change
• The ability to foster alignment and influence decision making
• Good legal research, analysis, and drafting skills
• The ability to provide clear, accurate, and consistent advice
• Efficient, rigorous, and well-organized, with good attention to detail and persistence in problem-solving
• Self-motivated team player that is comfortable with some autonomy
• Excellent communication (verbal, written, and presentation) skills with an open, direct communication style and willingness to engage in constructive debate
• Willingness to take on multiple responsibilities and the ability to multi-task and work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
• High level of integrity and strong professional ethics
Desirable:
• Publishing and media law, including copyright, defamation, rights of privacy and publicity, internet, and social media, an advantage but not required
• Language proficiency in German and/or Spanish is a plus but not required
• State and Federal contracting experience is a plus but not required

• Degree in life sciences + experience. Advanced degree preferred (PhD, PharmD, MD)
