The Social Security Disability Advocate will represent and assist individuals who file for Social Security disability benefits. The Advocate will be responsible for shepherding cases from initial intake to acting as the client’s representative at administrative hearings. Duties include reviewing a client’s application, document preparation, obtaining and analyzing medical records, and representing their client’s claim on appeals at all levels, including in court. Work is continually monitored and evaluated by the Supervising Attorney. Work schedule is as follows: generally Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening or weekend work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Conduct initial interviews with potential clients to determine possible eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits, along with the status of any pending claims and/or deadlines.
• Explain the Social Security Disability process and set expectations for timeline and required medical documentation and information.
• Collect detailed medical records, work history, and other supporting documentation from clients and their medical providers.
• Conduct legal research, including federal and state laws and the Social Security Administration’s policies and procedures.
• Understand and analyze medical evidence to build a strong case for disability approval.
• Prepare and submit thorough disability applications, appeals and required forms to the Social Security Administration.
• Build rapport with our clients through regular follow ups on application status and responding to requests for additional information.
• Collaborate with doctors, healthcare providers, vocational experts, community partners and others involved in the disability case.
• Clearly explain decisions and next steps to clients throughout the process.
• Maintain detailed records of all client interactions, applications, denials, appeals, etc.
• Maintain general administrative work – prepare files, update/maintain case management system and other similar duties.
• Keep accurate accounting of time spent on each client's case through the online case management system.
• Stay current on emerging professional information.
• Maintain confidentiality of all information handled.
• Comply with all agency policies and procedures.
• Work with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
• Must work the days and hours to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks, and be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements, including but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines.
• Must maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees and clients of the organization.
Position Requirements
• Attorney: Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from A.B.A. accredited law school. Member of any state bar.
• Non-Attorney: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Organization Management or related field required. Paralegal degree or related work experience required – may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
• Strong understanding of the Social Security Disability system and policies.
• Ability to synthesize complex medical information.
• Computer literate; knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Westlaw/Lexis and general Microsoft Office applications.
• Proficiency in typing, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
• Excellent judgment, organization, and efficiency, problem-solving and analytical skills in order to perform accurate case analysis.
• Must pass internal conflict check process.
• Capacity to learn and adapt.
• Dependability, initiative, motivation, and concern for interest of clients.
• Ability to work well with others.
• Strong calendaring skills and ability to multitask and manage cases.
• Strong, positive communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and responsibly.
• High ethical standards.
• Bilingual preferred (Spanish).
