Mō te tūnga | The role

We are looking for a passionate people... leader to lead and support a team responsible for the data quality analysis and reporting on the 2023 Census population, location and identity data. As one of the 3 co-managers of the 3 analysis teams, you will coach and develop your people to the best they can be in their roles.

This is a fixed term role until June 2024 to cover parental leave.

The role can be based in either Ōtautahi or Pōneke (Christchurch or Wellington).

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Census Insights you will lead a team of up to 12 analysts across the motu. You will work in collaboration with the managers of the Census Analysis - Work, income, disability and education, and Census Analysis - families, households and housing teams to collectively lead the 3 analysis teams as the analysts delve into the census dataset to explore and understand what the data is telling us, then summarise and document their assessments of data quality and recommendations for customers' use of the data.

Each day will be different, with your conversations, focus and support of your team shifting between a range of different types of work e.g. how our systems, processes and delivery plans are shaping up and tracking; supporting your team member's development and wellbeing; managing risk and working through issues and opportunities there might be as your team uncovers the insights in the census data; to thinking about what data quality information customers will need to support their use of the data via various products and services.

Collaborating closely with other teams in the motu, 2023 Census programme and elsewhere in Stats NZ will also be an important part of your role.

Te tūnga | The role

As a Data Collection Specialist, you will report to a Team Leader Data Collection and work in close partnership with other Data Collection teams. This role is all about the people. On a typical day, our Data Collection Specialists (DCS) are out in the community, creating and building meaningful relationships with local families, businesses, and individuals.

A big part of this role entails:

· Field work, visiting local homes to conduct face-to-face interviews with respondents

· Remote work from home via phone and email to schedule visits and follow up with respondents

Through these data collection activities, our DCSs contribute to the creation of resources and information that aims to improve and enhance life in NZ. To learn more, check out the list of our surveys here.

This remote work requires someone who can work efficiently on their own and must have access to fast and reliable internet, a current driver's license, and a roadworthy vehicle. We will set you up to work from home, and provide you with the equipment, training, and on-going support you need to succeed and remain safe while carrying out your work.

Our minimum guaranteed hours are 37.5 hours work per fortnight with opportunities to increase your hours. Many of our respondents find afternoons, evenings, and weekends more convenient, so your flexibility within these times will be required.

Te t?nga | The function

this function is a permanent position located in Christchurch. In your function as Principal Statistician, you will be responsible for providing subject matter skills in social science and technical leadership abilities across our suite of population and... social statistics. You will use your knowledge of conceptual frameworks and customer needs to the design, measure and report of the wellbeing of people in Aotearoa across a broad range of domains such as salary, work, housing, social connection and safety.

A Principal Statistician leads or undertakes research that is of key strategic importance in the official statistics system - bringing clarity to future directions, to develop recommendations about priority project activity, and ensuring that the current state of knowledge is well understood.

You will bring a collective leadership abilities approach which acknowledges the interconnected nature of our official statistics portfolio both conceptually and practically and Information technology also recognises the need to collaborate and work with and through others to achieve our results and deliver quality statistical products. Fostering long-term relationships with key external networks (domestic and international) to deliver value – for customers, and with M?ori, iwi and hap?. You will be an excellent communicator and may be called on to present to senior stakeholders and media.

You will also work across Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ and the data system to better deliver for te Tiriti o Waitangi partners, for example the development of te ao M?ori measures of wellbeing.

A critical element of the function is contributing to the development of Stats NZ's technical cohort and supporting capcapability building across the data system.

In your function as Principal Statistician, you will be using your skills in social science to provide technical leadership abilities to Stats NZ's population and social statistics programme. You'll also have a chance to contribute more broadly to the development of Stats NZ's technical cohort.
