Job Description
The New York Times Opinion section is seeking an editorial assistant focused on project management duties. The job is ever-changing, but the primary duties involve research, fact-checking and collaborating across teams on ambitious enterprise projects. Duties will depend on the daily needs of the department and may also include administrative tasks. This is a yearlong, temporary position based at our New York headquarters. It will report to the Special Projects Editor for Opinion.
The ideal candidate will be open to diverse points of view; have a sharp eye for detail; a strong sense of fresh arguments and good writing; superb research skills; a devotion to the highest standards of accuracy, precision and verification; the ability to meet tight deadlines; discretion in handling sensitive editorial material; and a strong interest in opinion journalism. Collegiality and diplomacy are essential.
Responsibilities
• Create an effective system for keeping enterprise projects on track, including facilitating regular check-ins with editors and department heads
• Fact-check and research the information contained in our editorial projects
• Assist with editing and digital production of pieces
• Collaborate with our video, audio, design, graphics and audience teams on developing assets for social platforms
Basic Requirements:
• At least two years of professional journalism experience
• Experience collaborating across teams on executing ambitious projects
• Ability to multitask and manage several deadlines simultaneously
• Excellent organizational skills with a sharp eye for detail
• Knowledge of collaborative tools that are useful for editorial project management, such as Airtable and Google Sheets
• Strong writing and editing skills, and knowledge of Times style or the ability to learn and apply it quickly
Preferred Requirements:
• Preferred background in CMS production and technical troubleshooting
This is a Guild position.
The annual base pay for this role is between $77,808.68 and $78,000.00.
