Position Summary

Under the direction of the agency manager and in cooperation with the Youth Services Coordinator, performs a full range of librarian tasks and related duties as required. Provides library services and programming for children/teens/tweens, parents, teachers, and caretakers. Focuses on engagement and collaboration with children/teens/tweens including those with diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Primary Responsibilities
• Serves as a librarian for all customers and works cooperatively as a team member with coworkers in applying the full range of principles and practices of library science.
• Performs assignments in the areas of youth services and adult services as required, to meet the needs of the agency. Conducts required searches, answers reference questions and provides information and guidance to customers.
• Conducts regular community needs assessments to collect feedback and create tailored services and programs to address identified needs for children/teens/tweens.
• Designs, promotes, presents, and evaluates a variety of programs for children/teens/tweens, with consideration of developmental stages and the needs, interests, and goals of all children, their caregivers, and educators in the community.
• Actively supports diversity, equity, and inclusion. Promotes a culture where all staff and customers belong.
• Ensures the library’s collections include relevant print and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of each respective age group/audience. May be assigned specialized areas of the collection and may assist in collection maintenance.
• May assist in developing reporting systems, and compile and maintain reference and statistical data.
• Develops and maintains effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies, and non-profits that target youth in order to plan and deliver programs and services that meet the needs and interests of local children/teens/tweens.
• Actively participates in school visits and participates in community-wide programs and functions.
• Utilizes library tools according to established policies and procedures and performs reader’s advisory for all ages.
• May be involved in training and instruction of co-workers and the public in the areas of print and non-print materials, online catalog and general use of the Library.
• Instructs children/teens/tweens and caregivers in information gathering, research skills and digital literacy skills.
• Attends and participates in youth services meetings and committees, and contributes to cooperative efforts to support system-wide youth services functions and programs.
• Keeps informed of current trends and participates in professional organizations.

Requirements

Knowledge/Skills
• Knowledge of library principles, methods and procedures.
• Possesses up-to-date computer and technological skills needed for customer service and programming.
• Knowledge of children’s/teen/tween and children’s literature and programming techniques.

• Experience working with a variety of computers and devices, as well as a working knowledge of the library’s on-line resources.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Works with local and national media (print, television broadcast, radio broadcast) to share the Library story of being welcoming, innovative, objective, accountable and collaborative. This includes responding to media inquiries and proactively pitching stories to the media in a strategic and sustained manner.

2. Establishes, maintains and evaluates regular communications with regional media partners to advance the Library story.

3. Coordinates engaging content across major social media channels. Creates social media campaigns to support key Library initiatives. Content includes the creation of photography and video for social media and web.
