The posted UC Salary scales set the minimum pay at the appointment as determined by appointment type and if applicable, rank and/or step. The base pay range for this position is $82,200-$235,400. Position description

The Department of City and Regional Planning (DCRP) at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applications for a full-time adjunct professor position in City Planning/Community Development and Education. The position will be filled at the rank of Full Adjunct Professor.

Faculty in the Adjunct Professor series are individuals who are predominantly engaged in research or other creative work and who participate in teaching, or individuals who contribute primarily to teaching and have a limited responsibility for research or other create work; these individuals may be professional practitioners of appropriate distinction. Appointees with titles in this series also engage in University and public service consistent with their assignments.

DCRP is seeking a candidate with the vision and drive to chart new intellectual territory at this critical time when the role of young people has never been more critical to the future of equitable, just and resilient cities.

We are particularly interested in individuals with a strong commitment to the connections between research and praxis who can offer critical perspectives on the powerful intersection of city planning and public education policy making, focusing especially on low income, BIPOC communities across California, nation and globally. Central to this is a commitment to increasing professional readiness and capacity for community engagement of young people and schools in city planning. The candidate should have deep experience working collaboratively and proactively to create a diversified pipeline of students entering the planning field at the university level and beyond. Also important is a strong record of teaching and professional leadership in the policies of community development and education and an active voice in professional and policy discourses. A background in developing innovative professional strategies and policies that support interdisciplinary action research and policy making. The successful candidate must also have a strong commitment and demonstrated history of teaching excellence.

We seek a scholar of outstanding achievement and reputation whose work complements that of existing faculty in DCRP, College of Environmental Design (CED), and across the campus. The candidate is expected to take a leadership role in DCRP's community development concentration. They will broaden the reach of community development in applied research, policy analysis, and community partnerships as well as teaching one course a year. The candidate will also work in an interdisciplinary context across CED and the University. The selected candidate will also serve as the Faculty Director in leading the Center for Cities + Schools located in the Institute of Urban and Regional Development. They will be responsible for designing the Center's strategy and building out key new programs and projects. They will plan, direct, and control the Center's budget, raise funding, manage staff, and serve as a leading expert on community development and education research and policy on behalf of the Center and UC Berkeley.

The Adjunct Professor's responsibilities are expected to include:

Teach at least one class per year closely related to activities by the Center for Cities and Schools;

Advise, mentor, and serve on Client or Professional Reports for students in the Master's of City Planning program;

Conduct and publish scholarly work on topics of relevance to the Center for Cities and Schools;

Participate in other departmental, college and university service.

The department seeks candidates whose research, teaching, and /or service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. This position is fully funded by the Center for Cities and Schools.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A Ph.D. or equivalent international degree is required at time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

A minimum of 7 years of teaching and research

Preferred qualifications

PhD (or equivalent international degree) in Education with a specialization in City Planning, Public Policy, or related field.

At least 10 years of teaching and research experience as well in community development and the intersection of cities, youth and education practice, planning, and policy.

An established history of distinguished research and practice in one or more of the following areas is required: community development, community engagement, and urban education, in the U.S. context as well as applied research at the intersection of education, city planning, community development and social enterprise.

Candidates should have related publications, including a book, book chapters, and other articles specifically at the intersection of city planning, education and youth

Demonstrated record of innovative development practice and/or proven policy impact.

Work experience in public and nonprofit sectors. Proven capacity to work collaboratively and meaningfully across disciplines and sectors to build and sustain relationships with civic leaders, community organizations, public schools, and all levels of government from local to state to federal.
