Professors of Teaching are expected to provide outstanding teaching, as well as demonstrate a commitment to high quality scholarly professional activity (such as research on pedagogy and/or public policy) and service related to the pedagogical mission of the school and university.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in one of the following disciplines: public policy, economics, political science, sociology, geography, or a related discipline, by the start of the appointment. We are particularly interested in candidates with a proven record of teaching excellence.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a commitment to high-quality and innovative teaching, preferably via prior teaching experience, in public policy-related courses at the introductory and advanced undergraduate levels, and at the graduate level (particularly with respect to master level courses). While all competitive candidates are expected to be able to teach courses with attention to and knowledge of data science and quantitative methods, the particular topics and their disciplinary focus can be broad and can include, but not be limited to, criminal justice policy, environmental policy, education policy, health policy, housing policy, immigration policy, and inequality and poverty.

The Assistant Professor of Teaching is a full-time position with the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate and has the official title of “Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment” (LPSOE). Appointees are appointed for two-year terms and eligible for promotion to Associate Professor of Teaching i.e., “Lecture with Security of Employment” (LSOE), which is analogous to tenure. Appointees must be granted “Security of Employment” by the end of the eighth year of service for continued employment. Teaching, scholarly professional achievement, and activities (as described below), and university and public service constitute the criteria for advancement. Responsibilities:

Teach one or more undergraduate courses, depending on the need and the candidate’s experience and availability. Duties will include full responsibility for course preparation and presentation, including but not limited to, lectures, preparation and grading of exams, office hours outside of class, and supervision of teaching assistants or readers if assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

The criteria for the appointment is evidence of teaching excellence and expertise in the subject matter area. Individuals recruited should possess at least a Master's degree (a Ph.D. degree is highly desirable) in the relevant subject matter area and proven college/university teaching experience or show strong promise in teaching.

The UCR Library is comprised of two facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 26,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 145, including 41 FTE librarians, 72 FTE staff personnel, and approximately 32 FTE students, in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC’s more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC’s California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the University's digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.

The Director of Research Services provides strategic vision and dynamic leadership in planning and managing the University Library’s Research Services Department. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research and Technology (currently vacant and reporting to the AUL for Content and Discovery pending position fulfillment), this position is responsible for refining and developing departmental scope, goals and policies, as well as providing employee supervision, goal development and assessment metrics. As a member of the library leadership team, the Director of Research Services works collaboratively in a vibrant and developing organizational environment. In addition to the Director, Research Services currently comprises four librarians and three staff members working in the areas of digital scholarship, data science, geographic information systems, innovative media, and maker services.

Key Responsibilities Include:

● Provides effective Research Services department management through the development and implementation of research education programs and services. Ensures accountability-driven performance expectations. Manages employee hiring, supervision, training, and professional development.

● Oversees the implementation and assessment of the department's services and programs in order to fulfill departmental goals and objectives.

● Provides programmatic leadership supporting the Creat’R Lab, Digital Scholarship, Data and GIS initiatives and other emerging research support programs and initiatives.

● Participates in general administrative duties, library-wide activities, committees, special projects and library programs.

● Builds collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the UC library system. Represents the UCR Library on various University of California standing committees, system wide initiatives, working and interest groups. Also participates in local, regional, and national profession forums relating to research librarianship as appropriate.

● Provides ongoing professional development opportunities, mentoring, training, coaching, and professional guidance to ensure that Research Services staff are knowledgeable and current on contemporary research tools and methods and emerging technologies.

● Works collaboratively with the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Director of Distinctive Collections, and other members of library leadership to set priorities and develop resources to enhance library teaching and outreach services.

● Assists in Library fundraising, grant-writing, and development efforts.

● Maintains professional awareness of new developments and programs in academic research and research librarianship.
