IAN Science Communicators use graphic design, data visualization, and story-telling to support various regional, national, and international socio-environmental projects. We create science communication products for various audiences using printed, on-line, social, and video media. Science communicators will layout and design printed products (newsletters, report cards, reports, books), analyze data using R studio, Microsoft Excel, or GIS, and teach others about science communication in professional and student courses and workshops. Science communicators also support stakeholder engagement workshop planning, organization, and facilitation, and, with experience, will begin to manage projects. Science Communicators have a career progression that begins with mastering the science of science communication, and can advance to include responsibilities in project coordination, project management, and program management. Learning from our experiences, we continually evolve and advance the work that we do so that we can have the most positive impact possible. This requires an exciting, dynamic, and multi-talented team of Science Communicators, Project Managers, and Science Integrators with both science and communication training. The Integration and Application Network (ian.umces.edu) is a global leader in scientific synthesis, science communication, and ecosystem health report cards, with ongoing projects in Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and North and South America. Our projects seek to engage stakeholders and scientists to create solutions to difficult environmental problems. This position provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes generous paid leave and health insurance and retirement plans. Minimum Qualifications:

A successful candidate for the science communicator role will have a Master’s degree in a natural science field (or a Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of experience), and an understanding of science communication principles with proven experience with Adobe Creative Suite. All science communicators will be provided with additional, on-the-job training in Adobe Creative Suite for the specific methods and techniques for IAN science communication product development while working as a science communicator. Continued skill growth over time is expected. Excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, and attention to detail are required. Overnight travel to project meetings and conferences and some international travel is also expected. The ability to work in a dynamic work environment with changing responsibilities in a team setting is a must. Artistic talent, understanding of social science concepts, experience with GIS, data analysis, data management, video production, or other science communication
Preferred Qualifications:

To be considered for the Senior Science Communicator role, in addition to the qualifications for the Science Communicator, the candidate will have 5 years of experience in science communication, expertise and facility with all aspects of Adobe Creative Suite, be able to independently produce high quality graphics and documents, and have experience in coordinating small projects with minimal supervision. Additionally, the Senior Science Communicator will have experience and expertise in at least one of the preferred qualifications listed in the Science Communicator role. The Senior Science Communicator is expected to provide guidance and oversight on science communication product development, and final review of science communication products, to maintain the high quality of science communication materials produced.
Physical Demands:

Ability to work for long periods at a desk on a computer. Ability to work in person in either of our offices in Annapolis or Cambridge, MD, and the ability to work remotely when necessary. Ability to travel locally by car, and non-locally by air.

The successful candidate will have a degree in marine or natural sciences or in statistics. You will have good oral and written communication skills. Desirable quantitative skills include predictive analytics, geostatistics, and Geographical Information Systems. Students with a strong quantitative background and programming experience (e.g. R or Python) are particularly encouraged to apply.
