Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

• * Assist in managing and directing the operations of the Financial Reporting department including employee work scheduling, staffing and other personnel activities; apply UMMS policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local statutes or regulations governing general accounting practices to ensure accurate and effective service.
• Ensure that UMMS policies and procedures are interpreted and applied correctly. Implement accounting policies and procedures as necessary to improve UMMS operations. Provide technical support regarding the implementation of tax regulations, generally accepted accounting principles and financial reporting requirements to upper management of Financial Reporting, to controllers of subsidiaries, affiliates, and joint ventures, and other members of management.
• Supervise the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with UMMS procedures and generally accepted accounting principles. Review and supervise the maintenance of the general ledger chart of accounts. Review the reconciliation of and interfaces between Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, and Payroll subsidiary ledgers with the general ledger.
• Assist in the accurate and timely preparation of various federal and state tax filings.
• Assist in the coordination of the annual external audit and ensures that all information is available and completed on a timely basis.
• Maintain and disseminate financial management reports.
• Supervise, provide leadership and guidance to accounting support personnel to assure accuracy and efficiency of work activities in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
• Participate in the hiring and performance evaluation, as appropriate. Monitor, train, review and provide technical direction to staff on accounting practices and departmental procedures.
• Supervise and assist staff in recording transactions in the general ledger and in performing reconciliations of accounts.
• Create and produce various management tools and financial performance information as deemed necessary by the financial management staff and Medical System department heads in monitoring financial performance. Participate in and contribute to the development of computerized financial management systems. Such responsibilities may include the following:
• Create and coordinate the timely distribution of Financial Reports.
• Develop and produce management reports to analyze the Revenue Cycle.
• Reserve adequacy analysis, for example: health benefits, worker’s compensation, medical malpractice, and patient accounts receivable. Provide monthly reports on the status of the above reserves.
• Roll forward of all endowment fund and restricted fund accounts.
• Assist the upper management of Financial Reporting with the development of department operating budget. Identify cost saving strategies related to administrative or operating expenses. Assist in identifying and implementing initiatives to increase productivity and efficiency of the department while trying to maintain positive staff morale.
• Communicate regularly with various finance personnel to ensure optimal efficiency and effectiveness of financial reporting.
• Keep abreast of current regulatory (federal, state, Health Services Cost Review Commission and The Joint Commission) information/guidelines and new, related UMMS policies; communicate relevant changes and/or protocol and procedural revisions to staff. Assist with the implementation of appropriate department operational changes to ensure compliance.
• Provide assistance to and communicate with various Medical System departments regarding monthly accounting reports and other accounting-related documents/information to explain accounting department policies and procedures. Such communications may include information and formal training sessions as well as memos or other forms of communication.
• Assist management in providing acceptable records and supporting documents to all internal and external auditors. Maintain various records, files, supporting documentation for regulatory or other reporting purposes.
• Develop and implement procedures in performing tasks required by the internal management staff or outside regulatory agencies.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
• * Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or related field or equivalent is required.
• Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred.
• A minimum of six years of experience in professional accounting or auditing work is required. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• * Proficiency in preparing and analyzing financial data and implementing changes to contain costs for budgetary purposes. Knowledge of general accounting principles is required. Knowledge of state and federal tax laws and regulations is required.
• Proficiency in performing highly complex mathematical calculations is required. This includes the calculation and interpretation of key financial ratios, is required. Demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Power Point used in the analysis of financial data is required. General knowledge of accounting-related information systems is required. Ability to use Microsoft Outlook e-mail/Calendar functionality.
• Proficient knowledge of supervising, monitoring daily work activities, evaluating, training and motivating performance of subordinate technical, professional and clerical support staff.
• Proficient organization and problem-solving skills are required to develop/implement efficient work processes, and to successfully resolve difficult, conflict-oriented situations.
• Effective time management is required. Ability to work effectively in a frequently stressful work environment and meet deadlines is required.
• Accountability for areas of direct responsibility is required.
• Ability to handle confidential issues with integrity and discretion.
• Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary.

Shift: Per Diem (PRN)

UMMS first established the UMMS Staffing Pool in late March, in response to a growing need for qualified professionals to assist us in all aspects of delivering exceptional care. Its primary goal at that time was to fulfill the staffing needs of our mission. We have since shifted our focus and our primary goal at this time is to provide staffing resources at the member hospitals of UMMS.

As a member of the Clinical Professional/Respiratory Therapist – UMMS Staffing Center, you will provide ad hoc assistance in a clinical capacity as needed at your designated UMMS location(s). Check out a list of all the UMMS member hospitals to find the hospital closest to you: Member Hospitals. Those working at locations in the Baltimore region will float between member hospitals in the Baltimore area.

General Summary
Consistently expresses and demonstrates respect, compassion and courtesy for patients, family/visitors, and team members. Assists the clinical nurse in providing individualized patient care consistent with the mission and values of University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute and in accordance within the scope of practice, professional, and regulatory standards. Assists the clinical nurse in providing care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, spirituality, and individual diagnostic needs of the persons served. Accountable to the clinical nurse, patients and families for processes and outcomes during an episode of care. Serves as a fully engaged member of the interdisciplinary patient care services team. Participates in cost effective strategies that optimize patient outcomes.
Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, and specific individual diagnostic needs of the patients served in his/her department. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group (pediatric, adolescents and/or geriatric patient group, culture and diagnostic specific).
Consistently expresses and demonstrates compassion and courtesy for patients. Extends courtesy and support to patient's families/visitors.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

• Electronic/Paper documentation- Accurately and concisely records patient care along the continuum. Attends required training on electronic documentation. Demonstrates ability to document/enter data correctly in the medical record/EMR verified by chart review.
• Wound Care- Provides patient care to promote healing and maintain structural integrity of the skin under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Performs skin care and hygiene for the patient requiring wound care as per the directions of the Registered Nurse. Performs wound care dressing changes without medication as directed by Registered nurse. Reports impaired skin integrity and/or wound impairment to the Registered Nurse in a timely manner. Assists the Registered Nurse with appropriate strategies and/or treatment measures to provide wound care
• Pain Management-Promotes a level of comfort acceptable to the patient. Screens the patient for pain and reports abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse. Completes annual competency for recognition of pain and pain scores -skill checklist on file.
• Communication/ Collaboration- Works effectively with interdisciplinary team to provide patient care while using customer service skills and promote safety. Uses verbal, interpersonal, and teamwork skills to provide care along with other team members in a cohesive manner. Demonstrates a positive attitude in the work environment.
• Collection of Specimens - Accurately follows procedural guidelines and uses proper technique(s) to obtain bodily specimen collection for laboratory testing. Completes annual didactic and/or written testing with results kept on file. Incorporates proper techniques for patient identification, method for collection of appropriate specimen(s), and documentation.
• Blood Glucose Monitoring (Accu-check) - Able to accurately perform testing and manage the care of the patient based on results achieved and clinical findings. Attends annual training for review and updates on blood glucose testing and monitoring equipment. Demonstrates proper technique and skills needed for obtaining accurate blood glucose results and documenting findings. Completes annual didactic and/or written testing with results kept on file. Quality monitoring performance is assessed annually and/or as needed at intervals based on performance criteria.

Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in good academic standing for junior or senior year of a BSN or AA nursing program.
• CNA certification required.

Qualifications

Education & Experience
• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required. BSN preferred. Up-to-date status on all mandatory training and classes.
