The Opportunity: The Center on Education Data and Policy is seeking a research analyst to work on a range of education policy projects on topics such as universal prekindergarten, school funding, school assignment, school segregation, and economic mobility. We are looking for individuals with a background in social science and/or public policy (especially education policy) and strong data management... and analysis skills. The successful candidate will contribute to multiple project teams, including through the following types of tasks: Responsibilities: Write computer programs that clean, merge, and efficiently store education datasets. Write computer programs that analyze datasets for a variety of research projects, ranging from blogs to major reports. Draft sections of reports and other research products. Serve as resource to other project staff on quantitative methods. Contribute to project management, including tasks such as budget monitoring, workplan development, monitoring toward short- and long-term project goals, and coordination with other project staff. Contribute to development of proposals for external funding, including research plans and budgets. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to and manage workflows on multiple projects. Who you are: The successful candidate will have: Completed (as of summer 2023) a master’s degree in a field related to social science (e.g. public policy, economics, statistics, computer science, political science, or sociology), or have an equivalent level of professional experience and education (e.g., a bachelor’s degree with 2-4 years of experience in education policy research) Strong coding and data management skills, including experience independently using a program such as Stata or R to analyze large, complex datasets Demonstrated interest in education policy at the PK-12 level Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and to developing evidence-based strategies to dismantle racist institutions and structures. The Urban Institute's Health Policy Center is looking for... a Research Assistant to support senior researchers on projects related to health equity, Medicare and Medicaid programs and payment policy, private health insurance reforms, Health Information Technology, and other efforts to improve access and quality of care. What you’ll do: Collaborate on projects that include a variety of research and analytic assignments related to health and health care of vulnerable populations, the reform of health care financing and delivery, and the effects of social, environmental, and policy factors on population health Work on assignments that include largely quantitative research tasks, such as collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, as well as qualitative research tasks, such as reviewing literature, web sites, and documents and transcribing and coding interviews. The Opportunity: Central to Urban’s mission is fostering a truly inclusive community that ensures ongoing relevance to a changing world. The Income and Benefits Policy Center (IBP) at the Urban Institute analyzes family economic well-being from childhood through retirement and undertakes research on a wide range of issues. The Income Support Team in IBP carries out research on a range of topics, including the social safety net, social insurance, taxes, and child support. The team’s research includes microsimulation modeling, analyzing the effects of different programs and policy alternatives, and tracking state policies for select safety net programs. The Income and Benefits Policy Center seeks a research assistant with a strong interest in social safety net programs to join the Income Support Team. What You’ll Do: Collect and analyze state Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) policies for the CCDF Polices Database project. Work with large simulation models (TRIM3 and ATTIS) to estimate how changes to safety net policies affect families’ economic well-being. Compile and analyze data sets using statistical analysis software (e.g. SAS, State, R). Summarize findings and present data effectively in multiple formats. Work closely with senior researchers to contribute to research papers. Who You Are: The successful candidate will Possess a bachelor’s degree in a field related to social science (e.g. public policy, political science, sociology, or economics). Preferably, have prior research experience (for example, through school coursework or internships). Have a strong interest in CCDF and other social safety net programs. Lived experience and personal familiarity with social safety net programs is a plus. Be interested in a position that requires highly-detailed work including both quantitative and qualitative elements. Be detailed-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to work on multiple priorities, work independently and as part of a team, and communicate effectively. Exhibit strong quantitative research skills, including prior experience with SAS, R, or similar software. Prior work with large data sets and household-level data is a plus. Show outstanding writing ability as well as excellent organization skills. Have strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; Knowledge of Access is a plus.
