Description

Regular, 1.0FTE, Librarian Appointment

Appointment at Librarian II or III depending on experience

Start date: ASAP

Position Overview

Situated at the University of Victoria Libraries, on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples on whose traditional territory the University of Victoria stands, and the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day, the Web Integration Librarian (WIL) will have a key role in the ongoing design and implementation of UVic Libraries’ digital presence that enhances the Libraries’ role in furthering academic research, student success, community engagement, and university reputation.

The University Libraries at the University of Victoria seeks a creative, energetic, technologically-knowledgeable, and talented Web Integration Librarian (WIL) to integrate principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion and create a “library voice and... style” throughout our digital presence. The WIL will help UVic Libraries in our efforts to decolonize our digital spaces and respond to a number of our “Open, Engaged, Enduring” Strategic Directions:
• To strengthen seamless discovery and access to resources to enable learning, teaching, and research
• To provide welcoming, inclusive, and intuitive virtual spaces that connect faculty, students, staff, and community with UVic Libraries, with the University of Victoria, and with each other
• To foster a learning culture in which everyone at UVic Libraries grows their potential, enhances their leadership skills, develops their technical expertise, and strengthens their collaborations

About the University of Victoria

The University of Victoria ranks consistently in the top tier of Canada’s research-intensive universities. As an internationally recognized teaching and research institution, we tackle essential issues that matter to people, places, and the planet. Our commitment to research-inspired dynamic learning and vital impact make this Canada’s most extraordinary environment for discovery and innovation.

Summary of Responsibilities & Reporting:

The UVic Libraries’ web presence (website, LibGuides, etc.) is the first and main point of contact for the vast majority of our users and stakeholders locally and around the world. The Libraries’ myriad of tools and resources for research and learning are also the most heavily used component of the University of Victoria’s web presence. The WIL will provide innovative, user & stakeholder-centered leadership for UVic Libraries’ digital presence, with primary responsibility for the main web site. In addition, the WIL will ensure a consistent “look and feel” to the Libraries’ LibGuides, LibAnswers, and many other online service platforms. As the University moves to a mobile-first digital presence, the WIL will ensure the Libraries fully leverage this opportunity.

The WIL will supervise a Web and User Experience Assistant and chair the Libraries’ Web Presence Advisory Group. The incumbent will work closely with all units across the Libraries, as well as key areas across the university. The WIL will report to the Associate University Librarian – Advanced Research Services.

• represent the Libraries as its primary web expert to the larger University community
• provide expertise and technical advice within the Libraries on emerging web technologies, platforms, and services
• ensure consistency of design and usability (for presentation, not content) for LibGuides, LibAnswers, and other service platforms (Cascade, LibGuides, Alma, DSpace, Samvera, OJS, Spotlight, AtoM, etc.)
• work with UVic Communications to align style, branding, and layout with the larger UVic web presence, as far as possible given the Libraries’ digital presence is largely a research platform, not simply a communications platform
• coordinate with the University’s web team to ensure successful integration of the Libraries’ web site within the overall UVic web presence
• continuously explore and evaluate new communication tools to recommend optimal digital platforms for engaging with community and stakeholders
• ensure that the Libraries’ web presence is relevant, accurate, up-to-date, and user-centered
• establish and promote current accessibility standards across the Libraries’ web presence
• lead efforts to create mobile-friendly web interfaces that leverage best practices for responsive design and machine-readability
• track usage of locally hosted elements of the Libraries’ web presence
• ensure the Libraries’ digital presence is search engine optimized
• ensure that effective training is provided to authors of library web-based content
• convene meetings of the Web Presence Advisory Group on a regular basis and serve as chair
• coordinate and contribute to the resolution of web presence problems and bug reports
