THE CHESAPEAKE BAY FOUNDATION...

Established over 50 years ago, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is the nation’s leading conservation organization dedicated solely to restoring and protecting the Chesapeake Bay, our nation’s largest estuary. With 300,000 members, an annual operating budget of $26 million, and a $55 million endowment, CBF’s 190 full time staff work in offices in Annapolis and Easton, MD; Richmond and Virginia Beach, VA; Harrisburg, PA; Washington, DC; and in 15 field education program locations across the Bay watershed.

CBF's headquarters - the Philip Merrill Environmental Center – in Annapolis is the world’s first USGBC LEED platinum building. In 2014, CBF opened the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach; the Brock Center is the tenth certified Living Building and one of the most energy efficient, environmentally smart buildings in the world.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

Environmental Protection and Restoration

CBF’s Environmental Protection and Restoration department defends and restores the Chesapeake Bay by protecting the Bay’s natural resources from pollution and other harmful activities by fighting for strong and effective laws and regulations; restoring the Bay’s essential habitats and filtering mechanisms; and involving citizens in CBF’s environmental efforts by recruiting, training, and incorporating them as effective partners and leaders.

CONTEXT OF THE POSITION

This position will support the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance with recruiting new partners, assisting with the coordination of meetings and events, and raising awareness with the public of both the coalition and our partners’ work.

Essential functions include:

• Supporting the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance Manager with outreach to the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance Partners and recruitment of potential core COA Partners.

• Recruiting new Chesapeake Oyster Alliance Reef Builder Partners, which come in the form of businesses, schools, and events tangentially supporting oyster restoration and/or aquaculture.

• Assist with the development, execution, and summarization of the Chesapeake Oyster Science Symposium, our annual fall conference bringing together the best oyster practitioners from the Bay region for a two-day educational experience.

• Assisting with developing content and managing our social media presence on our two primary platforms, Facebook and Instagram, including the creation and curation of original content.

• Conduct interviews and site visits with COA Partners to report out on their work as relevant to

Chesapeake Oyster Alliance

• Administrative duties associated with weekly and monthly meetings.

• Participating in site visits and field experiences with COA Partners.

• Planning and execution of our semi-annual COA Partner meetings.

• Compiling data associated with oyster restoration and aquaculture as part of the 10 billion oyster goal methodology.

A successful candidate must have self-initiative, the ability to work independently, as well as with a team, and excellent written and oral communication skills. We seek a committed, creative thinker interested in learning about the importance of the Bay oyster to the overall recovery of the Chesapeake Bay region ecosystem and economic health, as well as furthering the Foundation’s mission to "Save the Bay.” Candidates with experience in event production and managing social media pages will receive particular attention. This is a paid internship. Start and end dates are negotiable, but the successful candidate would begin work in August 2023 and complete work in late November 2023, working roughly 15-20 hours a week. Attendance of the Chesapeake Oyster Science Symposium in October will be required. Some additional travel may also be required. To that end, reliable transportation is a must.

Salary Range: $14

To apply, please send resume and cover letter through job posting on CBF website no later than August 11, 2023.

WE ARE COMMITTED TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND JUSTICE

Just as biodiversity is the key to a thriving ecosystem, human diversity is the key to saving the Bay. Success depends on people from widely diverse backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, identities, and races taking collective action. Clean water, clean air, and a safe environment are rights we all share.

To increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will:
• Recruit and retain a staff, board, and membership that reflect the diversity of people living within the Chesapeake Bay region;
• Strengthen and broaden the diversity of our partnerships;
• Celebrate and value the diversity of staff; and
• Fight to ensure that everyone has equal access to clean water, clean air, and a safe environment.
• Studies show that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every qualification listed in a job description. Wondering whether you have the right credentials or background to apply? We value lived experience, are serious about embracing diversity, and are committed to building a team that represents our communities’ backgrounds. We encourage BIPOC, women, people from the LGBTQ+ community, and people with disabilities to apply.

CBF is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status
