Position 1 Summary... The Forest Ecology Specialist with the Applied Forestry Bureau, Forest Economics and Ecology Section serves as an expert on forest ecology issues for the Division and the Department. This position develops ecological assessments, technical publications, including forest management guidelines, handbooks, publications, and other documents, as well as related trainings. Duties include conducting literature reviews, synthesizing existing information, and preparing reports. Topics are varied and include developing guidance or information on managing forest associated wildlife, forest types, and harvest systems, such as biomass harvesting. Duties will include developing and testing questionnaires, implementing surveys, compiling and analyzing data, supporting policy review teams, preparing written reports, and providing oral presentations.
75% – Gather, compile and integrate information from various sources, including literature, maps, GIS layers, databases and experts on geology, soils, hydrology, vegetation, land use, and natural disturbances, to include in ecological assessments, management guidelines and other publications. Assist in the development of policies and procedures related to ecosystem management guidance.
15% – Develop communication materials and trainings for internal staff and external partners. Regularly review, revise and update related Division of Forestry web-pages.
10% – Coordinate project meetings with internal staff and external partners, develop time lines and goals, participate and take notes to share with project team members and partners.
Position 2 Summary: The Forest Silviculturist with the Applied Forestry Bureau, Forest Economics and Ecology Section, serves as an expert on silviculture issues for the Division and the Department. The position will assist with managing the Wisconsin Silviculture Guide (WSG) and handling communications, including sharing of findings with internal and external stakeholders. This position will coordinate all public and internal input and review on handbooks, manual code and other silviculture related guidance. Additional duties may include maintaining current understanding of the silviculture literature through literature reviews, preparing written reports, and providing oral presentations on silviculture topics.

In addition, this position will also work on stream crossing permits related to forestry activities.
40% – Work on updating specific topics within the BMP manual by examining the most recent scientific information and past BMP monitoring trends. Work with the Forest Hydrologist to present these findings to the BMP Advisory Committee.
25% – Coordinate efforts with public land foresters for Chapter 30 stream crossing permits and wetland permits. Design and identify proper crossing locations and structures for silvicultural use. Determine stream navigability and wetland delineations for specific harvest projects and crossings. Work with state wildlife/fisheries biologists during NHI review process, and state Water Management Specialists to ensure permit conditions are met and complete in nature. This position will work on a variety of forestry projects withing the Division of Forestry, Forest Ecology and Economics section. The primary goal/responsibility will be to assist in setting up a field project evaluating harvest techniques in pine systems to mitigate wildfire hazard and meet various objectives (e.g., natural regeneration, brush control). This will include baseline stand... measurements, helping to establish new silviculture methods, prescribed burning, coordinating with various stakeholders and setting up timber sales. All projects are diverse and highly collaborative and the person hired will be part of a research team. Work may include forest assessments, tree and plant identification, forest measurements, setting up stands for treatments/manipulation, chainsaw work, use of increment borers to collect tree age information, data organization and management, and report writing. The successful applicant should be in good physical condition and able to handle fieldwork in a variety of conditions. The position will be located at the WI DNR Science Operations Center on the east side of Madison, but will require extensive travel across Wisconsin. Start dates are negotiable.
