REACCT-CAN’s objectives are to tackle molecular and inflammatory aspects of aetiology, biomarkers of early detection and treatment response, prevention, late presentation, optimised treatment and high mortality rates.

The Sydney Brenner Institute for Molecular Bioscience, and the Strengthening Oncology Services Research Unit, both of the University of Witwatersrand are pleased to announce the availability of bursaries for PhD students to work on projects spanning the following areas of research:

i) Studying the genetic susceptibility to infection in African cancers

ii) Studying cancer epidemiology and barriers and enablers to cancer care

For... research programme i) The Evolving Risk Factors for Cancers in African Populations (ERICA-SA) study on risk factors in common African cancers has generated serology data for >40 antigens from microorganisms associated with cancer risk, and genome-wide genotype data on >2 million genetic variants from more than 5000 Black South African cancer patients. This unique data resource provides an outstanding opportunity to investigate the contribution of host genetic factors to susceptibility to infection with viral and other pathogens known to be associated with cancer risk.

This programme would suit someone with one or more of the following: a background in bioscience, systems biology, biomedical informatics, biostatistics, infectious diseases or genetics/genomics with existing knowledge of using mathematical and computational models to help interpret biomedical data and/or sound statistical analysis skills with knowledge or interest in computer programing and bioinformatics.

For research programme ii) Three areas of research opportunities are described below:

a) Cancer health system strengthening research in resource-constrained South African Public Health Systems, focusing on barriers & enablers to early detection of common cancers among South African adults and ways to improve their access to treatments and care along the cancer care continuum, (from community screening for symptom detection, through diagnosis, treatment and end-of-life care).

b) Investigating ways to implement patient-centred care among adult patients with common cancers. We wish to gain an understanding of how well patients from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities understand their diseases and planned treatments, how best to involve them in shared decision-making with their treating physicians and how best to implement patient-centred care in resource-constrained tertiary cancer centres.

c) Investigating pharmacogenomic and pharmacokinetic determinants of cancer treatment efficacy.

Suitable candidates for research areas a) and b) will have clinical, palliative care, public health, epidemiology, social sciences or implementation science backgrounds.

For research area c) candidates with experience in pharmacokinetic and pharmacogenetic treatment modelling will be suitable.

Eligibility

An appropriate Master’s degree obtained within the last 5 years.

Doctoral support is for three years with renewal for the second/third year subject to performance and progress. Only applications from South African citizens and individuals with Permanent Residence in South Africa will be considered. Student to start in June/July 2023.
