The activities, programs, services, and regulations of the university are all planned with the following objectives in mind. Parent & Family Programs welcome parents and families; creates opportunities for meaningful engagement with the university; connects parents and families with one another; informs and educates parents and families about resources, critical issues and topics relevant to student success.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice Dean for Student Success, the Director of Parent & Family Programs facilitates and advocates for the role of family involvement in community development and individual student success. The program provides resources and activities that connect families with each other and with the W&M community. The office implements pre-matriculation events, large-scale university events, and various constituents events throughout the year.

The Director will have the overall responsibility for the department including creating, executing, and managing the communications, marketing, and engagement strategies for current families and is responsible for event management for all population-specific and campus-wide events (Family Orientation and Family Weekend), including the planning, promotion, implementation, and assessment.

The Director also develops and manages the budget for the office, supervises professional and operational staff and student interns, and collaborates with other university departments to develop and maintain communications and marketing strategies. The Director works with university advancement and the vice president for student affairs as a member of the parent team for the overall success of the Parent & Family Council including engagement programs and initiatives.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Significant experience (typically 4-8 years of experience,) directly related to the position.
• The ability to lead, interface, and effectively work with a diverse population that includes faculty, student affairs staff, students, parents, family members, alumni, volunteers, donors, colleagues, administration, and the broader academic community.
• Superior presentation skills that include excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Excellent problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
• Expertise with Microsoft Office suite (outlook, excel, word, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, or a related field.
• Event planning and program implementation experience.
• Experience in the areas of parent engagement, marketing, strategic communications, public relations, volunteer management, and emerging and best practices in social media.
• Professional experience in higher education working closely with staff, undergraduate/graduate students, alumni, and parents.
• Demonstrates a desire to work with our family volunteer communities to welcome parents and families to William & Mary family; create opportunities for meaningful engagement with the university community; connect families with one another on a regional level; and educate families about valuable resources, critical issues, and topics relevant to student success.

Position Summary

The Vice Dean (VD) for Student Success serves as a member of the Dean of Students Leadership Team and principal advisor to the Dean of Students. Focusing on self-awareness, autonomy, accountability, and advocacy, Student Success serves to support each student’s well-being and engagement needs in times of daily support, celebration, and crisis.

Reporting directly to the Dean of Students, the Vice Dean provides secondary leadership to all functions under the Dean of Students and is a primary point of contact for students, staff, faculty, families, and other stakeholders. The incumbent manages the daily operations, administration, and budget for the Dean of Students Office. The Vice Dean will lead with purpose, demonstrating a commitment to furthering our dedication to community care, restorative practice, civil discourse, and belonging.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Managing the operating budget and gifts, including forecasting expenditures and revenues.
• Supervising the Directors of Care Support Services and Parent and Family Programs.
• Managing high-level student and family crises and maintaining a strong, visible presence on campus and at student events.
• Assisting staff in developing grant proposals and participating in external fundraising activities.

Required Qualifications
• Master’s degree in a related discipline OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Significant professional experience in Student Affairs, demonstrating increasing responsibilities.
• Leadership experience that includes experience managing professional-level employees, as well as fiscal oversight/budget management.
• Experience with emergency and crisis management.
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to successfully work with a diverse population of students, faculty, parents, and constituents.

Preferred Qualifications
• Doctorate or terminal degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or a related field.
• Experience with program planning and implementation.
• Experience with and demonstrated understanding of FERPA, Title IX, and ADA laws.
• Significant supervisory experience with a collaborative approach to management.
