WNEM-TV is looking for a Sports Director/Anchor/Reporter. Mid-Michigan is a sport’s lover’s dream. We cover the Major League Detroit Sports teams, the Big Ten, MAC Conference, OHL Hockey, Minor League Baseball and an emphasis on High School Sports. We are looking for a Sports Director who can break the big stories and move beyond the news conference sound bites. Our next Sports Director should consistently enterprise compelling human-interest stories and find the unique angles that will captivate sports fans and non-sports fans alike. The Sports Director will be expected to not only turn content for the weekday newscasts, but also plan coverage for big events and cover weekend sportscasts when necessary. Social media and digital content creation is a significant part of this role.
Duties/Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
• Plans sports coverage for daily stories and big events, including coordination of Sports Dept. staff of 2 anchors/1 reporter.
• Prepare and anchor 3 sports segments per weekday (5p/10p/11p)
• Delivers scripted and ad lib material with professionalism, personality, and purpose
• Coordinates with news managers and producers to develop memorable stories and comprehensive coverage of all sporting events
• Crafts stories that go beyond surface details; accentuate unique enterprise angles and gain exclusive access to players and leaders in the sports world
• Can juggle multiple stories and projects at once, demonstrates exceptional time-management skills by meeting all deadlines
• Unwavering journalistic integrity and ethical standards
• Write stories for station website and post sports stories to station’s digital platforms.
• Appears on behalf of the station at public events
• Ability to flex schedule, including working on weekends for major sports events and High School Football nights
• Travel required when necessary for coverage of big games or events
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Ability to operate a news camera and editing equipment
• Can work in all weather conditions and carry up to 50 pounds
• Has a valid driver’s license and a clear driving-record
