Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects primarily on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).
The Southwest Conservation Corps is partnering with the San Juan National Forest, Pagosa Ranger District to run a 4-person, wilderness, crosscut crew. You will be trained and certified in all aspects of crosscut saw work, backcountry travel and will be integrated with the USFS, Pagosa Ranger District. Crosscut saw crews are focused primarily in designated wilderness areas where mechanized chainsaw use is prohibited. Over the past few years there has been a concerted effort to clear large swaths of downed trees and avalanche debris from remote trails in these areas of the forest. Crosscut Crews cover a lot of miles and have the opportunity to explore many incredible areas! Your crew will work primarily a 4 days on, 3 days off schedule, learn how the USFS operates, become proficient with the Crosscut saw, and get to backpack through the rugged San Juan Mountains for a Summer.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Mentorship:
• Manage, supervise, and lead the day-to-day details of project work
• Integrate values pertaining to DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) within the corps
• Implement skills training on worksite and facilitate intentional discussions via informal lessons to contribute to the crew’s personal growth and group dynamics
• Promote individual corps member development and a healthy community
• Must be willing to follow and enforce all SCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent SCC. This includes creating a substance free work environment, refraining from the use of tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs while involved in the program
Project Management, Safety & Implementation:
• Train, motivate and supervise a small crew to efficiently clear wilderness trails, while working long hours and managing high quality of work and crew morale
• Think critically to resolve issues and solve problems
• Communicate effectively & coordinate logistics with the Pagosa Ranger District & SCC staff
Administration:
• Complete professional documentation of time sheets, daily and weekly field reports, corps member evaluations, restorative justice forms, incident response forms, and project related deliverables
• Manage food budget and credit card for purchases
Minimum Qualifications:
• Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission
• Wilderness First Responder by the start of the program
• Ability to effectively manage all aspects of crew life and production within a 40-50-hour work week
• Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment
• Must be adaptive, patient, and able to maintain a positive perspective throughout
• Able to work long days in adverse conditions
• Must be able to speak, understand and write English
• High School diploma or GED certificate
• Must be 21, have a clean driving record (insurable by SCC) and a current driver’s license

Your crew will work primarily 4 days on, 3 days off, learn how the USFS operates, become proficient with the Crosscut saw, and get to backpack through the rugged San Juan Mountains for a Summer.
All crews will go through a 5-day (unpaid) volunteer orientation (May 29th – June 2nd, 2023). This will include a Wilderness First Aid training. Food and space to camp is provided for this training.
Qualifications

Southwest Conservation Corps
The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is a program of the non-profit service organization, Conservation Legacy, that is built on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that operated from 1933 – 1942. SCC provides youth and young adults opportunities to complete conservation projects primarily on public lands. While serving with SCC, members receive training on job skills, conflict resolution, leadership, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Programs are developed using a step ladder approach to provide a progression of skill development based on a member’s needs. Members receive a weekly living allowance, training, and an AmeriCorps Education Award (for qualifying individuals).
The Southwest Conservation Corps is partnering with the San Juan National Forest, Pagosa Ranger District to run a 4-person, wilderness, crosscut crew that is fully integrated with the USFS trail crew. You will be trained and certified in all aspects of crosscut saw work, and backcountry travel. Crosscut saw crews are focused primarily in designated wilderness areas (Weminuche and South San Juan Wilderness) where mechanized chainsaw use is prohibited. In recent years there has been a concerted effort to clear large swaths of downed trees and avalanche debris from remote trails in these areas of the forest. Crosscut Crews cover a lot of miles and carry all of their tools and belongings with them, moving camps daily. Your crew will work primarily 4 days on, 3 days off, learn how the USFS operates, become proficient with the Crosscut saw, and get to backpack through the rugged San Juan Mountains for a Summer.
All crews will go through a 5-day (unpaid) volunteer orientation (May 29th – June 2nd, 2023). This will include a Wilderness First Aid training. Food and space to camp is provided for this training.

PURPOSE:
To perform the production process in order to optimize the use of all resources and/or exceeding established plant goals and client/customer expectations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Learn the stacking procedure to meet or exceed production goals
• Cross train to be able to run the saw as a backup operator
• Follow all safety, quality, production, materials and plant policies and procedures
• Support the mission/vision of the company through daily tasks and behaviors that align with the company culture/CITE principles
• Complete all training required for operation of assigned area
• Available to work assigned schedule and shift hours as necessary to meet client/customer requirements
• Operate computer software necessary to assigned area
• Train new or back-up operators using certified peer trainer tools and techniques
• Responsible for daily 5S/clean-up expectations for assigned area
• Participate on Kaizen, TPM and cross functional team events as requested
• Self-starter able to work independently
• Perform preventative maintenance on equipment as needed
• Must be able to learn Factory Floor System,
• Apply basic mathematical concepts, define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
• Be willing to participate in BBS activities and on BBS Teams
• Cross train in other machine centers as requested
• All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job the requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required.
Education, Experience and Skills
• High School Diploma/GED preferred, in lieu of education, extensive knowledge of all processes associated within the scope of the respective team may be considered
• Manufacturing/work experience and willingness to learn to operate required positions in the team assigned
• Record of successful team support, meeting work performance expectations and commitment toward continuous improvement
• Experience performing duties in a team environment committed to positive performance and SQDC goal achievement
• Demonstrate behavior that supports the company’s core values and CITE principles
• Has excellent communication skills with knowledge of Word, Excel, and Microsoft Outlook preferred
Language Skills:
Must read, analyze, and interpret common business documents such as packing lists, manifests, bills of lading, pallet tickets, or job orders. Must communicate effectively with co-workers and customers/clients in an effort to respond to common inquires or complaints.
Mathematical Skills:
Use basic mathematical concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to such tasks as inventory control, material ordering, and job order verification.
Reasoning Skills:
Perceive problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an assorted number of tasks or instructions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, hear, crouch, use stairs to access work area, stand, bend, reach and feel with hands and arms and walk for entirety of shift. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
