As a Quality Application Engineer, you'll be a key part of our agile delivery teams- from helping refine and test requirements, to building automated regression test suites. You'll ultimately help ensure your team continually delivers quality applications into production at Discover.

Our Card Portfolio group owns dozens of cardmember experiences, from setting up your account on Discover.com for the first time to adding your Discover Card to your phone (and much more). This is where you come in. We need a hands-on technical leader who's excited about making an impact. You will be responsible for the technical development and quality delivery of software engineering solutions. You will lead a team of engineers while using your technical expertise to drive vision into action and results. You will develop and coach teams to be able to identify, manage, and escalate risk, and effectively manages risk within the teams you oversee.
Major Responsibilities
• Mentor and lead a staff of engineers in both technical and soft skills to craft a team of highly technically competent, consistent, thoughtful and customer-centric technology experts. This includes ensuring the group is adhering to principles of engineering excellence within their technical domain, applying consistency of technical execution, sharing common practices and challenges within the team and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning within the team.
• Leads and utilizes highly technical skills to contribute as an engineer within a product team designing, developing code and maintaining quality technology solutions for a product or set of products including developing own subject matter expertise. Demonstrated experience in multiple software languages, modern software methods, CI/CD, cloud, and automated testing.
• Hire, retain and lead high-functioning, diverse group of engineering professionals, establishing clear objectives and key results, developing consistent set of practices and process across the team and driving towards resolution of challenging problems. This includes all performance management aspects of leading the engineers including acquiring and providing 360 feedback and administering reviews. Manages software ownership and development from initial concept through continuous improvement.
• Lead and shape the technical vision within their product team and be an essential member of leadership team including acting as a leader in the Discover engineering community affecting and advancing the architecture across the company and ensuring adherence to all regulatory, compliance and audit requirements. This includes defining how technical work should be done, selecting appropriate tools, defining technology, quality, experience and implementation standards and practices within own technical domain.

• Relevant experience as a Project Manager—client or agency side—managing the planning, timing, flow and coordination of complex and integrated direct mail and paid digital programs
• Create long-and short-term plans, including setting targets for milestones and adhering to deadlines
• Keep the broader team informed with timely status updates
• Serve as a point of contact for teams assigned to the same project to ensure team actions remain in synergy
• Communicate with leadership to ensure the project aligns with their goals
• Perform quality control on the project throughout development to maintain the standards expected
• Adjust schedules and targets on the project as needs or financing for the project change
• Find ways to mitigate risks to projects if deadlines are not being met or roadblocks occur
• Coordinate regroups and manage meeting schedules
• Provide operational support managing legal submissions and contract development/routing
• Make effective decisions when presented with multiple options for how to progress with the project

Product Owner ensures an outcome for a product is delivered that meets the requests from stakeholders and customers. Establish Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Objects and Key Results (OKRs) for the product team and ensure alignment with senior leadership (e.g., SPO, Dir, etc.). Creates and/or maintains key product documentation (e.g., customer journey map, technical specs, process mapping, etc.). Identifies and defines key non-functional requirements (e.g., security, availability, performance, etc.) to achieve necessary product metrics. Owns definition of Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and features/user stories for delivery product roadmap; in-line with the Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) of the greater product vision outlined by SPO and/or Business Director is the final decision maker for product scope. Understands consumer and market needs and industry/competitive trends to identify market opportunities to drive values.
Builds product backlog, prioritize its items to achieve Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and continuously keep it up to date. Holds meetings with the product team to continuously update product backlog. Ensures product features and processes align with applicable Discover compliance and risk management standards. Ensures product adheres to the highest quality standards, including releasing security patches not linked to customers.
Defines functional and non-functional product requirements; ensure completeness; integral and consistent; source of requirements for product team. Creates and validate user story acceptance criteria. Defines and ensures appropriate testing frameworks for product features (e.g., market testing, functional performance, etc.) Works with Data stewards in their respective LOBs to ensure required Data quality controls are identified and implemented. Inspect and evaluate product progress through each iteration.
Partners with business technology to create technical features that are required to continuously optimize system components and underline infrastructure maintenance. Creates protypes (e.g. MVP's, POC, etc) based on customer feedback to test, learn and validate ideas before committing to larger scale development. Synchronizes and aligns with Product Family POs on prioritization and delivery to maximize Product Family Value.
Builds a culture of accountability and ownership by empowering the product team to make decisions as close to the work as possible. Manage dependencies with other team's functions while identifying, building, and managing strategic partnership across different product teams.

Job Description
As a Principal Application Reliability Engineer, you’ll tap into your passion for finding and fixing inefficiencies to solve our reliability and performance issues. In our Agile environment, you’ll focus on availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change and problem management, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning of our services. Your projects will deliver enhanced infrastructure, development, and deployment automation at Discover. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.

• Competent in multiple contexts, including programming languages, security, automation, testing, and business domains and is the go-to person for many people (inside and outside of their team)
• Participates in strategic technology decisions and learns how these decisions impact Discover as a whole
• Proactively identifies and mitigates issues based on intuition and experience in multiple domains
• Coaches' technology communities at Discover
Minimum Qualifications
At a minimum, here’s what we need from you:
• Bachelors – Computer Science or related
• 6+ Years -- Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related
• Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of proficient on the Dreyfus engineering scale
Preferred Qualifications
Bonus Points If You Have:
• Experience with SRE design to address reliability and resiliency with availability of 5-9s
• Knowledge and understanding of emerging trends in the SRE field
• High level of familiarity with the Linux command line and scripting
• Comfortable with production environments, firewalls and networking
• Studied architectural patterns at scale, including thoughtfully designed APIs, repeatable delivery pipelines, and efficient computer engineering principles
• Deep knowledge and understanding of emerging trends in the SRE field
• Working experience in deploying, observing, monitoring and altering in K8s with OLTP
• Knowledge of the automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or Chef
• Knowledge of working in public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP)
• Working knowledge of messaging services like RabbitMQ, SQS, Kafka
• Working experience in caching systems like Redis
• Working experience with logging and monitoring systems (Splunk, Datadog, New Relic, AppDynamics, Instana, CatchPoint) with a mindset towards predictive analysis
• Working experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery models including Blue/Green and Canary release models is a plus
